Ged nach robh Gàidhlig a-staigh againn dar a bha mi nam bhalachan, bha gu leòr mun cuairt oirnn`sa choimhearsnachd. Bhiodh boireannach à Leòdhas a' gabhail cùram rium fhèin 's mo bhràthair agus ga bruidhinn rinn, agus chaidh mi tro thaobh na Gàidhlig an dà chuid sa bhun-sgoil agus an àrd-sgoil. Eadar cùram Leòdhasach, àrach Aillseach, tidsearan-sgoile à Ratharsair is an t-Eilean, bliadhna a' fantainn an Uibhist agus cèile Tirisdeach, chanainn-s' gu bheil mo dhual-chainnt beagan troimh-chèile, ach nì mi mo dhìcheall faclan Aillseach a chleachdadh. Tha ùidh fharsaing agam ann an cultar na Gàidhealtachd, gu h-àraidh ann am beul-aithris agus òrain traidiseanta. Tha mi nam neach-chiùil cuideachd, agus cluichidh mi ceòl traidiseanta air a' ghiotàir. Is caomh leam a bhith a' cur ri leasachadh na Gàidhlig mas urrainn dhomh!]]>

Tha sinn fìor thoilichte daoine cho fileanta fhaicinn air an Fhòram. An dòchas gum bi cuspairean ann anns am bi ùidh agad :D , agus gum bi thu cuideachd nad chuideachadh dhuinne ma bhios ceistean-cànain againn, no ceistean-dualchainnt! :spors:]]>

Cheannaich mi e bho Amazon nuair a bha ... it was first released. Scottish Gaelic was one of the options available on the DVD. I believe Comhairle Nan Leabraichean also sold copies. I wish they had done the same for "Òran na Mara", but this did not appear to be the case. Now, I just record the re-runs on BBC Alba, including today's showing of "Òran na Mara".

Sorry for the English, I can read Gaelic far better than I can compose it.

Huh, the Gaelic option isn't available on my DVD of Secret of Kells. At least, not on my Region 1 copy - I will have to track down my British one and see if it's any different.]]>

Rinn mi sin gus an d' fhuair mi seo. = I did that until I got this.
Rinn mi sin gus sin fhaighinn. = I did that in order to get that.

Bha mi a' smaoineachadh, a bheil ciall gu tur eadar-dhealaichte ann eadar an da 'gus' an sin sa Ghàidhlig, no an canadh tu gur e "I did that in order that I got this" a th' ann sa chiad fhear aig an aon àm?

An adhbhar a tha mi a' faighneachd, 's ann a tha mi airson rudeigin leithid "…in order that [x] was/will/would BE [whatever]" ràdh. Tha fios a'm gum b' urrainn dhomh sin a dèanamh le "ach gun" (m.e. "…ach gun robh iad toilichte"), ach an tèid "gus" obrachadh mar sin le "bi" cuideachd?

m.e. Am bi iad seo ag obair? (dearg air rudan mì-chinnteach)

Rinn mi sin gus an robh iad toilichte. = I did that until they were happy / …in order that they were happy. [?]
Rinn mi sin ach gun robh iad toilichte. = I did that in order that they were happy.

No a bheil dòighean eile ann?]]>

Ach mar sin — rud eile a bha mi a' faighneachd — am bi, can, "…gus an robh iad toilichte" ag obair mar an dà chuid "…until they were happy" *agus* "…in order that they were happy", no dìreach "…until…"?]]>

Le so that tha e cumanta an tràth cumhach(conditional) a chleachdadh, mar a rinn Gun Chleoc gu h-àrd.

Rinn mi sin gus an tàinig an dorchadas - I did it until darkness came
Rinn mi sin gus am biodh tu toilichte. I did that so that you would be happy / to make you happy.

My Gaelic-speaking grandparents' generation, and also my (less Gaelic=-speaking) parents, here in the HIghlands, often used until for so that. There can in fact be a certain overlap anyway:

Come over here to the light till I see you better. (Purpose, not time.)
Go over to the fire till you get warm.(With a sense of purpose rather than time, but it will also take time.)]]>
