uamhraidh (fearful / gloomy)
So judging by Dwelly a fearful/gloomy place may have even been the original meaning? Interesting. Mòran taing (also for bringing my attention to the word uaigneach, which I didn't know)!

Grammar Check please? Family members
You're linking a noun and a pronoun, so you have to use 'S mi(se) ... rather than Tha ... And "brother" is masculine so no lenition: am bràthair (mòr/beag).

uamhraidh (fearful / gloomy)
Both AFB and Mark's dictionary have the example expression "guth uamhraidh - fearful voice", and Mark's entry in fact reads "fearfull (full of fear)", which makes me wonder whether the word can be also used for something inducing fear, as in "tubaist uamhraidh - fearful acci...

Pronunciation of unstressed -aid
Just to make sure: do you mean that I don't have to pick one and stick to it for all words, so it's fine if I say e.g. /karɪdʲ/ but /uːhbradʲ/? (I hope the aswer is yes, it would make life much easier ).akerbeltz wrote:On the bright side, it is not a hanging offence to flit between /ɪdʲ/ and /adʲ/

Pronunciation of unstressed -aid
According to Blas na Gàidhlig rules this should be /-ɪdʲ/ (A19), but there are several words in AFB where the ending is put as /-adʲ/: casaid, cùbaid, eileamaid, pioghaid, trioblaid and probably more. Are these exceptions to the rule? For instance, because some of them started life as compounds, so ...

It seems that it can be ambiguous, though, also meaning "attacker, forward": "S e an rud as cudromaich gun cum an loidhne dìon againn smachd air an luchd-aghaidh acasan." "B' e Loch Abar a b' fheàrr a thòisich, an luchd-aghaidh a' fàgail loidhne-dìon a' Bhaile Ùir car an-fho...

What is the Gaelic for "an opponent" in a tennis match, game of chess &c? I found several words for "opponent" and "rival" in AFB, but when I tried googling them I generally got no non-dictionary hits at all, or ones which implied some intrinsic hostility, like oppo...

rùsg - fleece
Oh, that's fine - in fact it's reassuring to know that other people also use this principle of "if my L1 doesn't have a word for it, there's no need to insist on Gaelic having one". I was out of my depth here though, because fleeces are rarely worn here even now, never mind in 50 years, an...
