Re: Akerbeltz wiki: feedback on some historical details in a few articles

dè < gu dè < ciod e I was taught at uni, MacBain also has it in his etymological dictionary. It may well be as you suggested, that there was an intermediate stage with depalatalization between cote and ciod e before it went back to being palatal in some areas with dè.

Re: Akerbeltz wiki: feedback on some historical details in a few articles

Ah brilliant, that makes a lot of sense. I've tweaked the dé section, it now says: dé "what?". Now the emphatic "fuller" form of this is gu dé and this itself is a re-interpreted form of ciod e (which is why Lewis dè with broad /d/ is actually the more conservative (i.e. historic...

Re: Help with vocal digital synthesis

I'm also somewhat dubious as to what the point is. Of course with STT and TSS there are issues of accessibility i.e. they're useful to Gaelic speakers who are blind/deaf/dyslexic etc. But I fail to see how vocal synthesis would aid Gaelic speakers? If successful, wouldn't that mean that we lose yet ...

Hi Andrew. Just to check first, you do know there is a pretty good Gaelic voice?

Re: Akerbeltz wiki: feedback on some historical details in a few articles

Though I think you meant initial p, and then kʷ following later. ;-) :mhoire: fixed But it should regularly be *ciodh – I have no idea why the original /ð/ got delenited here. Ciodh does appear as an obsolete form in some Gaelic dictionaries. But anyway, I agree there was probably some knock-on eff...

Re: Akerbeltz wiki: feedback on some historical details in a few articles

Thanks for the detailed feedback! Hope my criticism isn’t too harsh Heaven's no, you're become very nice about it and in the main, I concur with all points. A lot of that site, especially the older articles, are based on my notes from uni and that's a while back AND of course students don't always c...

Re: a' rocking and a' rolling

Watch the spelling to begin with :priob: a' riuth 's a leam > a' ruith 's a' leum a' siobadh 's a' suathadh > a' sìobadh a' riuth 's riagail > a' ruith Second, they're not verbs, they're (verbal) nouns, they have grammatical gender and everything. Lastly, they're not such a big thing, apart from a' ...

Re: Why is it "Càit' a bheil" and not "Càit' a tha"?

I had to ask myself, all hail Prof Rob Ó Maolalaigh. The solution is this: càite is actually three words fused together, the Middle Irish (Old Irish used something else, it used cía airm / c'airm + a relative clause) pattern was based on the declarative áit i raibhe sé "the place in which it wa...

Well, right next to it I see "Carn Derg" so in all probability, it would be "A' Chreag Dhearg"

I would go with biorra-crùidein. Kingfishers just don't occur across the Gaelic speaking areas left today if you look at their distribution map
