... Thuirt Bòrd na Gàidhlig nach b' urrainn dhaibh airgead a bharrachd a thoirt dhaibh seach gu bheil Riaghaltas na h-Alba air buidseat a' Bhùird fhèin a reothadh airson trì bliadhna, an dèidh dhaibh a ghearradh ron a sin. ... Dh'innis Riaghaltas na Rìoghachd Aonaichte gu bheil iad a' dol a dhìon a...

Re: 'Chaidh' passive in relative clauses

@ Nìall Beag: So if I Google "but the majority of them is" and get half a million hits, does it mean that all of those are by erring non-native speakers, or that in "the majority of them" the qualifier is the pronoun?

Re: 'Chaidh' passive in relative clauses

Oops, I always forget that with "majority" you can use either "is/was" or "are/were" in English. (You can't in Czech, it's a singular noun and that's that, even if it describes a plural concept. Same like "team", "government" &c.)

Re: 'Chaidh' passive in relative clauses

But "The pieces THAT were made there" isn't "Na pìosan a chaidh A dhèanamh an sin", it's "Na pìosan A chaidh a dhèanamh an sin". Personally, I would think correct should be either "Bha a' mhòr-chuid (den phìosan) a chaidh a dèanamh..." or Bha a' mhòr-chuid (de...

Chan ann, uaireannan, m.e. a rèir RnanG: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03965vl Aig amannan eile, ge-tà 7 gu neònach, tha ainm ceart Bheurla aig Albannach agus eadar-theanagachadh aig Sasannach, m.e. "Gordon Brown no Daibhidh Camshron" sa Chaledonian Mercury (no An t-Airgean-beò Caillean...

Re: Dè an t-ainm a th'ort?

Uaireannan, feumar compromise reusanta a bhith ann. Mar eisimpleir, tha an litir š san t-sloinnidh agam. Gu nàdarrach, chan uarrainn dhomh iarraidh air na Breatannaich ga chleachdadh nuair a bhios iad furm air choireigin a' lìonadh air a' choimpiutair, tha fhios nach bi am meur-chlàir Sheacach aca (...

Feumaidh mi aideachadh nach eil mi ga thuigsinn. Dè a tha ann am "mataraidh"? Cha do lorg mi am facal àite sam bith.

Re: What does it mean? Various questions

As the English version says "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said 30% of the building was damaged by the fire, as well as various machinery, and half of it was affected by smoke." I think they meant that.

Re: New Gaelic center in Oban

In your case, I would have thought it was of interest how Scotland (your current home) is seen in your old home. A different window. I can see what you mean, but after decades spent there I think I have a better idea about that than what I can glean from Czech media, especially as nine times out of...

Mar sin, dè cron as urrainn do Galloway a dhèanamh?

Re: New Gaelic center in Oban

I have friends in Europe who are interested in Scotland and sometimes pass on snippets from the online Scotsman (which they subscribe to, and i don't) about Gaelic and Scottish history from my area, in case I have missed them. I am glad they do that and have in fact missed things they passed on. I ...
