A' cur na srathrach air a' ghearran ceàrr

Is fhada on uair sin. Dè ur cor? Tha mi ann an-dràsta gus ràdh beag eile a thoirt dhuibh. Laigh mo shùil air ann an seann iris Ghàidhlig, agus is e seo gnàth-fhacal a dh'fhaodadh a bhith air chuimhne ann am bad-eigin fhathast ach cha chuirinn geall air. Is e an tuiseal ginideach de srathair a th' an...

Using Ann for Exists

Ah I see, but in that case there is still something odd about it. I think because it lacks a time phrase, such as an-diugh It's a lovely day in Biggar would more likely be expressed like this : Tha latha brèagha ann am Biggar an-diugh. If you put an-diugh after it, then that sentence would feel less...

uamhraidh (fearful / gloomy)

Okay, thanks. Where does uaghaidh come from, as it’s a form of uamh in some dialects.

Using Ann for Exists

'S e sìde mhath an-còmhnaidh a th' ann and 'S e sìde mhath an-còmhnaidh a th' ann am Biggar and 'S e sìde mhath a th' ann am Biggar (Biggar is good weather) are all unnatural contextually and wouldn't be said or written. 'S e ... a th' ann is used to DEFINE something with emphasis, i.e. to say what...

A' seotadh agus a' tapachadh

Laigh mo shùil air deagh abairt mu bhith a' sgrùdadh 's a' seòrsachadh tagraichean (candidates) airson a' phoileis. Bhon Dòrnaidh, sa Mhormhaich (Gleann Seile)- DASG : a’ seòrsadh nan uan. Notes: sorting lambs according to quality for the sale. (gan topadh – 1st quality ’s gan seotadh – 2nd quality)...

uamhraidh (fearful / gloomy)

"àite uamhraidh" sounds fine for "a gloomy fearful place" as far as I can tell - though I am aware of examples using "aognaidh" for gloomy, rather than "uamhraidh". I think it would work fine for a collocation like: "àite uamhraidh, uaigneach"* As Dwelly, etc. says the word is related to uamh (cave,...

stall - location, position, site

Bha mi ag èisteachd ri mòran chlàran gu cabhagach air an trèan, mar sin, cha do ghlèidh mi tiotal a' chlàir 'nam chuimhne. Ach, tha cuimhn' a'm air na thuirt e mu "stall an àite".
"thill iad sa chàr gu 'stall an àite' sam (air neo "far am") faca i (no e) an solas"

STALL - Ged a tha faclan coltach ri seo 'nan cruth is litreachadh, chan eil na faclairean a' toirt eisimpleirean den chiall as cumanta a tha air an fhacal STALL . Ann an leabhar Sheonaidh Ailig nach maireann, "Steall à Iomadh Lòn", bidh am facal seo a' nochdadh grunn thriopan. Tha e air a chleachda...

Taboo or??

It would be more common among native Gaels to put it in a sort of vocative case.
It would also be more common to hear it after a mistake is made. E.g. a singer fluffing their lines or something like that.

"A chaca!"

Cupa cofaidh air mo bhois

An robh cabhag ort a-riamh, ach thu gus tiachadh leis a' phathadh aig an aon àm? Have you ever been in a hurry, but dying of thirst at the same time? No, dh'fhaoidte gun robh thu air do chois tràth sa mhadainn, agus dh'fhàg thu an taigh gun srùbag a ghabhail idir. Or, perhaps you were up early in th...
