Re: Leabhraichean le Teipean?

For new beginners, there is this online, animated e-book that presents the text in English and Gaelic, with audio: An Gàradh aig Sìne , Pretty nicely done. These Gaelic versions of Beatrix Potter's stories aren't bilingual but there's a CD available for them (note the CD includes readings of 5 of th...

Ceart gu leòr, ma-thà. Tha cuideigin mar sin an còmhnaidh ann ann an gach coimhearsnachd, nach eil?

Mòran taing. :)

Re: Gilleasbuig Aotrom

Gabhaidh mo leisgeul airson a' Bheurla ach what the bleep is this guy's deal? I found his blog by way of Tìr nam Blog on Twitter: they auto-tweet his every new entry and then, of course, I stupidly click on the link in the Tìr nam Blog tweet because hey, look, there's something in Gàidhlig in my Twi...

Re: ...Losag?

I think "rach e à sealladh" is suppose to be "he/it went from sight/view" i.e. he/it disappeared. Although it should be chaidh e à sealladh. Rach is present tense.

Now I remember why I don't play these kinds of games

Re: ...Losag?

I guess. It's the only way it makes sense. On another note: what sense does the "gun" in that sentence make, anyway? It looks as if it says "...without stopping the blood with his fingers". Yeah, sorry. My oversight there. I think that's suppose to be the idiomatic way to use "gun"to say "he *still...

Re: ...Losag?

It looks like a person's name of some kind, and if you are playing Polyglottal Telephone, I suspect it's the last person's attempt at rendering of a name, or the version of that name in the t*ns preceeding this one, into Gaelic-friendly spelling--i o s a g. Perhaps it was a variation of "Joseph" tha...

Re: R caol

Flòraidh NicDhòmhnaill , who is a native spaker from Benbecula, has a pretty pronouced "th" sound to her slender r's. You can hear her speak on the CD that comes with her book Còco is Crùbagan. That allophone for the slender r is only found in certain dialects in the Western Isles, so if that book y...

Re: Dòighean-labairt airson "disappointment"

Mòran taing, a dhithis dhuibh. Chuir e às mo ghabhail mi He has thwarted me of my original intention. He has disappointed me. (Dwelly) Cuideachd, chanadh cuid ' mealladh-dòchais '. Ah, glè mhath. Bha mi air "cuir às gabhail" fhaicinn ann an Stòr-dàta no Am Faclair Beag ach cha robh mi cinnteach ciam...

Dòighean-labairt airson "disappointment"

Dè a bheil dòighean airson "disappointment" no "I am disappointed" no "It disappointed me" a chantainn sa Ghàidhlig? Ann an Ceap Breatainn, canadh duine "Bhris an dùil agam", à reir neach-teagaisg AGA againn 's tha e à Ceap Bretainn fhìn. An can daoine ann an Alba sin cuideachd? Anns an faclair Chai...

Re: Gàidhlig for 'Who are you to question me?'

lol... tied up in knots definitely. My apologies for wasting your time. So having said all that.. it appears you want the character to "sound" English but in Gaelic, if you didn't you would problably prefer an expression which literally conveys disparagement rather than using an English idiom which...

Re: Gàidhlig for 'Who are you to question me?'

I see. So some of our best and most experienced linguists have been tied up with tronsloting a wee bit of trite sci-fi. Ceid, bow your head in shame. Agus sin carson nach toil leinn obair mar seo a dhèanamh tric. Agus sin carson nach tèid mi gu 'n fòram seo tric. You have no right to talk to me lik...

Chuir thu dìreach iongnadh orm leis na gnìomhan Arabach is Pearsach agad! You just astonished me with your Arabic and Persian deeds! Uill, tapadh leat. Chan eil sgrìobadh Arabach is Pearsch ro dhona. Ach dèan mi bùrach leis a' Chirilis. Obh 's obh. :mhoire: Bha agam ri chuir "stickers" Cirilise air...

Arabach is Pearsach aig an aon àm :mc: :adhradh: Seadh. 'S e gòraiche a th' innte. Sàr-ghòraiche. Ach tha mi a' dol air adhart leis an dà chànan seo gu slaodach, slaodach. :priob: Yeah. It's foolishness. Absolute foolishness. But I am progressing with these two languages very, very slowly. Tha mi a...

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

Tha mi a' deasachadh a dh'obair air sgrìobhadh Arabach is Pearsach. I'm getting ready to work on Arabic and Persian script. 'S e seo rud taitneach mu ionnsachadh a' Ghàidhlig--chan eil aig duine ri sgrìobhadh ùr ionnsachadh. This is a nice thing about learning Gaelic--one does not have to learn a n...

Interesting. I'll keep this in mind, but I think there's some nuance here I'm not grasping. :?
