Re: Gàidhlig for 'Who are you to question me?'

In the context of the story, the speaker is a god who is being criticized by one of his creations. So it has that sense of strong, unequivocal authority. Ah the context :) In this case you could also put it as "cò th' annad a bhith 'gam cheasnachadh?" I think I like that one myself. I like the "Dé ...

Re: Gàidhlig for 'Who are you to question me?'

I have a sneaking suspicion that doesn't work as an idiom in Gaelic. The closest I can think of which doesn't sound too English would be something like Dè an t-ùghdaras a th' agad a bhith 'gam cheasnachadh? Dè cead a th' agad... That first one might work. "Cead" to me is not as strong as "ughdarras...

Gàidhlig for 'Who are you to question me?'

I'm working of a Beurla-gu-Gàidhlig tr*nsl*t**n practice and I'm stuck on this phrase: "Who are you to question me?" I can't find any references to an idiom using "Cò thu/sibh" used to express this sort of sentiment but I did find this phrase at Am Faclair Beag, "Dè an duine thusa?" for "Who do you ...

Concerning "Meagsago" and other Anglicizations

Chan robh mi cinnteach càit' a cuir seo, agus feumaidh mi seo a mhìneachadh anns a' Bheurla. Ach freagairidh mi gu beachd nas aosda le Seonaidh anns a' chòmhradh "Dé tha thu ag ithe?": A rèir an òrdugh, "Meagsago" amsaa, ach cha toil leam sin, air sgàth 's nach bi na M...aich a' cleachdadh "cs" no "...

Tha i glé ghrianach an-diugh ach fionnar gu leòr a bhith cofhurtail. 'S ann gu math tioram a tha an t-àile ged-tà.

It's very sunny today but cool enough to be comfortable. The air is rather dry, though.

Re: We can't afford funding for the Gaelic minority

You know, there was this Irish guy who once said, "The cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing." Being an American, I try to refrain from commenting on Scotland's politics too much, but wherever I read gòrachd like this, I really wish I could ask the person to his or he face, wh...

Re: Air a bhith... overused...?

air a bhith is a perfectly acceptable construction in Gaelic, the main question should be when to use it, not if. As I see it, the main problem is that in normal spoken discourse between native speakers, 4 tenses and moods normally do the trick (present, past, future, conditional). The concept of t...

Re: Spelling my name in Gaelic

Yeah, all are OK. When it comes to "traditional" spelling, there's not really a single way for many of these really older names. Maclean is a pretty old one, like my grandmother's maiden name, Macleish. That's an really old name and there's a gazillion variations of that name in both Gaelic and Engl...

Móran taing, a GhunChleoc. Dìochuimhneachaidh mise sin--teas/teth--daonnan. :mhoire: :?: Ach, bhiodh e dhen t h eas seo , nach bhiod? Nach biodh "teas" séimhicte as deidh "de/dhen"? Co-dhiù, tha an-t-sìde air fàs nas fionnadaire an-seo. Cha bhi i ach mu 90-92F (32-33C) an-diugh! Many thanks, ...

Tha mi deiseil am broinn a' fhionnaradair a ghlanadh an-dràsd'. Bha rud breun, grod a-muigh ann. Chan eil mi cinnteach dé bha e ach tha am fàileadh air fàg. I just now finished cleaning the inside of the refrigerator. There was something rotten inside. I'm not sure what it was, but the smell has gon...
