Re: Help with a Sentence for a Poem I'm Writing

lèirsinn is wider than fradharc. Both can refer to the biological power of vision but in terms of an abstract vision (e.g. of the future), only lèirsinn covers that.

Re: An Tuiseal Ginideach---feminine genitive forms being lost?

Bear in mind that in speech, final /ə/ before another vowel and at the end of a phrase or sentence has been routinely dropped for a long time. Something like Bha iad thall an-siud, aig doras na h-eaglaise has been /egLɪʃ/ without the final /ə/ for a very long time in speech. I think the main differe...

Re: tr*nsl*t**n of Aigha bàs

Careful with the spelling - it's buaidh no bàs, the grave is important, without it, buaidh no bas means "victory of a palm" (as in the inside of your hand) 8-)

Re: The sound of 'r' at the end of a word

I don't understand the phonetic symbols at all - that's a language in itself! You know, I always find that a weird one. Not the fact that one might not know the IPA, but the fact that people put up such a fight over learning 40 odd symbols and the way to say them which would help them produce high ...

Re: Pronunciation of agus

It's just more colloquial than regional, you'll hear it in most places, see this map. As the other said, it goes from /aɣəs/ to /ɛɣəs/. I think I've heard /ajəs/ too but I'm hazy on that.

Re: math math vs glè mhath

Doubling adjectives is not exclusively child language in Gaelic. But it's more colloquial than literal i.e. I would'nt write "bha am buidheann seo mòr mòr" in an academic essay but it would pass muster in a live news broadcast "bha buidheann mòr mòr de dhaoine ann an Glaschu an-dè&quo...

Re: bhitheas vs bhios and bithidh vs bidh

The distinction between dependent and independent is an established concept in linguistics in general, and functions at a clausal level. The only wrinkle in Gaelic is the reanalysis of copular constructions as pre-verbal particles. That's not a major wrinkle though, as the same logic holds -- the v...

Yes, what Niall said. Beware of homographs, it's a bit like pérmit and permít in English.

Re: chun vs do 'n

do in a directional sense is (in)to, gu is just to(wards), so tha mi a' dol do thaigh mo mhàthar > I'm going inside, tha mi a' dol gu taigh mo mhàthar > I'm not specifying if I'm going in, I may just throw a brick to get her to come downstairs or I may even stop at the pub next door to meet her the...

Re: "anns a'" vs "sa" etc?

There's a couple of relative simple phonetic rules which govern this in speech: - if a word final vowel is identical the a following word initial vowel, delete vowel 1 (a tha ann [ə ha auN] > [ə hauN]. - word final weak vowels (the schwa) are always in danger of dropping off, especially at the end o...

Re: bhitheas vs bhios and bithidh vs bidh

I don't think Niall's explanation above is quite right. Dependent and independent verbs in Gaelic are fairly well defined concepts and that's nothing to do with the juxtaposition of sentences. It merely boils down to what particle sits in front of the verb. In Gaelic, that boils down to 3 options: n...

"anns a'" vs "sa" etc?

Semantically they're interchangeable. My personal take is that san/sa/sna are marginally more colloquial than anns an/anns na but I don't think there's much in it. To put it this way, I cannot envisage a scenario in which an essay might get marked down for using san/sa/sna over anns an/anns na .
