Carson a chanas e an seo: „ pàircean brèagha“? Tha am facal na shuide san iolra, ach tha e boireann cuideachd, nach eil ? Chan eil mi ga thuigsinn.

Why does it mean here: "pàircean brèagha"? The word is plural, but it´s also female, or not? I don´t understand it.

Warum heißt es hier: „pàircean brèagha“ ? Das Wort steht im Plural, aber es ist auch weiblich, oder nicht ? Ich verstehe es nicht.

In the plural it doesn't matter if it's masculine or feminine. What counts is whether the final consonant is broad or slender. slender = lenition, broad = no lenition.

Nominative/Dative:

Fir bhrèagha
Boireannaich bhrèagha
Taighean brèagha

Genitive:

Falt nam fear brèagha
Falt nam boireannach brèagha
Doras nan taighean brèagha

So you're a Saxon then?

Dresden: an e Uachdar Shagsainn a tha seo?
Dresden: is this Upper Saxony?

Beagan cheartachaidhean:

Sagsainn Iosail - adjective after noun

Uachdar Shagsainn no Sagsainn Uachdarach, is dòcha?

Tha Sagsainn taobh an ear na Gearmailte.

Tha siubhal a' còrdadh ris an t-Sagsannach, riumsa cuideachd !

Thadhail mo charaid ...

"Taobh an ear" - "east side [of]". Maybe to make the point that "A' Ghearmailt Shiar" and "A' Ghearmailt Shear" no longer exist as political entities, but it is nonetheless true that Dresden is in the eastern side of Germany.

Gaelic usually uses terms like "ceann a tuath" and ceann a deas" where English would use "northern" and "southern", for instance.

Like Seonaidh said. Gearmailt an Ear = DDR, Taobh an Ear na Gearmailte = Ostdeutschland.

A h-aon (#1) - Cò às a tha sibh?

Unread postby Raghnaid NicGaraidh » Mon May 09, 2016 2:21 am

às a tha mi? Chan eil mi cinnteach...

Rugadh mi ann an Àdalaidh, ann an Astràilia-a-Deas. Tha mo phàrantan às Alba agus bha sinn a’ fuireach ann an Gearasdan ‘n uair a bha mi òg (tha mi a’ smaoineachadh gun robh e Gearasdan, co-dhiùgh). Ach thogadh mi ann an Astràilia-a-Deas agus thòisich mi bunsgoil ann an Astràilia-a-Deas cuideachd. Tha mi a’ fuireach anns na Coilltean Àdalaidh agus tèid mi gach latha dhan Àdalaidh airson oilthigh.

Cò às a tha mi? ‘N uair a bheil mi ann an Astràilia, tha mi ag ràdh, “Tha mi à Alba”. Ach ‘n uair a bheil mi ann an Alba, tha mi ag ràdh, “Tha mi à Astràilia.”

Tha mi... Ciamar a chanas mi “confused” anns a’ Ghàidhlig?
