Hello everyone! It's been a long time!

I was wanting to observe Gaelic month and I decided to write my Facebook posts in Gaelic. I was wondering if my posts are right. Would you critique these please?

1. A bheil seo Hipster Jesus? Tha mi meadhanach dearbh gu bheil e Hipster Jesus.
   Is this Hipster Jesus? I'm fairly certain he is Hipster Jesus.

Well done for deciding to celebrate Gaelic Month in that way, though - 's math a rinn thu!

In fact you're basically trying to tr*nsl*t* quite complex English grammar you haven't had yet in Gaelic - my general advice would be to try to express yourself as simply as possible, using constructions you've learned so far.

Here's a start, just picking out a couple of things.

1. Grammar points:
's e (=the assertive verb or 'copula construction') versus tha (Look it up. )
An e HJ a tha seo? Tha mi gu math cinnteach gur e. (= gu + 's e)

2. am falt fiadhaich a th' air (hair, like clothes, is 'on' you, not 'at' you.)
Relative clause: which his auntie gave him = a thug antaidh dha.

Nae language/grammar points from me at present (do far too much of that elsewhere...). A good tip, perhaps - do it in Gaelic first. That is, if you find some weird relative pluperfect subjunctive impersonal or garbage like that in what you want to say, think of another way of saying it that you can do in Gaelic.

That last example from GunChleoc is the immediate tense. Carries a sense of immediacy and also of the speaker "wanting" people to go.

Using the verbal noun with the future of "tha" is more likely, I'd say. 'S e an gnìomhair "dol" agus riochd teachdail de "tha" as coltaiche.

"Am bi gin agaibh a' dol do Spòrsan Grandfather Mountains?

"gin" often comes with the compound preposition of "aig + thu/sibh" as you are asking people directly.

Different words for "games" in Gàidhlig depending what type. Most common is "Geamaichean" these days, but "Spòrsan", "Cluichean" are all possible here.

He he, tha mi duilich! I was worried I'd start the thread then not make it back to post anything. Wanted to make sure I had somethng of value before I put it out there.

Tapadh leibh, a h-uile duine! I appreciate having even a few of these looked at. I am using some grammar I haven't had yet, but I've had a decent amount of higher grammar as well, just not using it all properly. Still; I am going a bit beyond where I am right now and my writing is way far out from of my ability to hold a conversation. I'm gonna re-prioritize on that point.

Basic Gaelic concept:

There are two verbs 'to be'. IS (assertive, for asserting things) and THA (descriptive, for describing things).


Assertive verb - IS:

If you say one thing IS another (A=B), you use the assertive verb , which conveniently in Gaelic is 'IS':
IS comes in various forms.

Is mise Anna. I am Anna (I = Anna)
Short form > 's mise Anna.

Apart from telling people your name, with two nouns or noun and pronoun you usually use a roundabout construction nowadays, saying something is 'in me' (it's the essence of what I am):

I am a doctor = it's a doctor that's in me - 'S e dotair a th' annam.
Mary is a doctor = it's a doctor that's in Mary - 'S e dotair a th' ann am Màiri.

So> 's e long taibhseach a th' ann an long sàmhach.


BUT:

in more formal, older, more literary and more proverbial Gaelic (NOT in modern everyday Gaelic), you find the neater form:

Is A B ( A: general category = B: particular item)
Is iasg bratan - a salmon is a fish.


So > Is long taibhseach long sàmhach is also possible.


Descriptive verb - THA:
You describe what someone/something is like, what they are doing, where they are, etc.

Tha mi sgìth.
Tha Màiri ag obair ann an ospadal.
Cuin a tha thu aig an taigh?
Càit a bheil thu a' fuireach?
