Air ar cumail ri cloich

Còmhradh

OGHA : An robh sibh a' cuideachadh ur màthair 's ur n-athair timcheall an taighe 's na croite?
SEANMHAIR: O bhà. Cha robh a dhà dhòigh air. Bha sinn air ar cumail ri cloich oir bha gu leòr obrach aig mo mhàthair 's m' athair ri dhèanamh.

Anns a' chòmhradh seo, tha an t-ogha a' faighneachd do a sheanmhair mu làithean a h-òige ann an Uibhist. Nuair a bha ise 's a bràithrean 's a peathraichean òg, b' fheudar dhaibh am pàrantan a chuideachadh leis na caran timcheall an taighe agus obair croitearachd. Bleoghainn, cur buntàta, sgioblachadh an taighe..msaa.

Thuirt a sheanmhair gun robh iad "air an cumail ri cloich", 's e sin gun robh iad air an cumail ag obair gu cruaidh. Cha b' e rud dona a bh' ann, ach cha robh a pàrantan a leigeil leotha a bhith leisg.

Beurla: Bha sinn air ar cumail ri cloich. - We were made to work hard/We were kept working hard.

Nuair a bha mi san sgoil bhiodh mo phàrantan 's mo sheanmhair ag ràdh. "Just you keep your nose to the grindstone if you're wanting to pass these exams! None of yon gallivanting!" amsaa.

Tha e eadhon ann an OED:
Phr. to hold (keep, bring, put) one's nose to the grindstone : to get the mastery over another and treat him with harshness or severity, to grind down or oppress; also, in mod. use, to keep (oneself or another) continually engaged in hard and monotonous labour.

agus tha às-aithrisean aca bho 1533 gu 1886, aon le Robert Burns (bho 1786) nam measg:
Be to the Poor like onie whunstane, And haud their noses to the grunstane.

A bheil sibh deimhinn às gur h-i clach-bhleith a' chlach a th' anns an t-seanfhacal Ghàidhlig ge-tà?

Chan eil e soilleir dè seòrsa cloich air a bheil a' chlach san t-seanfhacal Ghàidhlig a' toirt iomradh!

People going to church on Sunday morning [in Killin] would say, "Tha mi a' dol don chloich [I am going to the stone]," which Mr Walker thinks is a remnant of paganism.

Anns a' cho-theacsa seo (obair), tha e coltach gur e clach-bleith a th' ann.
(No clach dha rìribh de seòrsa eile co-dhiù, mur e calque trath a th' ann - clachan a thoirt falbh bhon achadh, no clachan a bhriseadh sa chuaraidh amsaa.)

Chan e an taobh mòralta (clach/eaglais: laborare est orare) air a bheil an abairt a' cur cudrom, ach dìreach cho cruaidh 's a tha an obair.

cuideachd, san abairt Beurla (sna co-theacsan a chunnaic mi an-seo co-dhiù), feumaidh tu fhèin cur romhad obair gu cruaidh. Leis an abairt Gàidhlig, 's e càch a thug seo ort.
