Re: Group Skype for beginners
Hello, everyone!
My name is Michael. I'm from Saint-Petersburg (GMT+4). And I would like to learn Scottish Gaelic. So I'm looking for a group to join. I have almost no knowledge in Gaelic. I watch videos on the Internet, and download some student's books. But It's still hard to learn without any speaking.

Halò a Mhicheil,
Ma thogras sibh, cuiribh gairm-Skype thugam (dougfraser), sa Bheurla, agus chì sinn dè ghabhas dèanamh.
Hi Michael,
If you like, give me a Skype call (dougfraser), in English, and we'll see what can be done.

Haidh, a Mhìcheil , agus fàilte ort!
Welcome!
Do take up Doug on his offer! He'll be able to advise you.
If you decide you want a more structured course there are distance courses available via phone or Skype, but they are all starting around now, or very soon, so contact the colleges quickly if interested.
One is the Cùrsa Inntrigidh (Access Course), run by Sabhal Mòr Òstaig (Skye, Scotland). It's the lowest level they offer, and good for 'false beginners'.
http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/en/cursaichean ... nntrigidh/
Another is the Beginners Course run by the Atlantic Gaelic Academy in Canada, also quite fast-moving.
http://www.gaelicacademy.ca/
(I know this is not strictly 'Skype conversation' information, but just to alert you to the need to act soon in case you're looking for a full course.)

Hàlo !
I'm quite interested in this Group Skype. However, I am a true beginner and cannot build my own sentences for now, does that matter ?
When will be the next sessions ?
Mòran taing !

Re: Group Skype for beginners
Hi Marine
Thanks for your email re Skype. The main purpose of this small group oon Skype is for learners who, because of where they live, have no one with whom to practice their Gaelic. It is not really for complete beginners so probably is not suitable for you.
There are other possibilities if you would like to start learning Gaelic - here are some:
Cùrsa Inntrigidh - this is a 'distance learning' beginner's course run by phone by the Gaelic College at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig inSkye. May be expensive!
'Beag air Bheag' - available free on BBC web site
'Speaking our language' excellent TV series from the BBC. I think it's available on line
'Teach Yourself Gaelic' - inexpensive book by Robertson and Taylor ISBN 0-340-55923-3
In any case, have a look at www.learngaelic.net
Hope this is helpful

Re: Group Skype for beginners
Thank you for everything, that helps a lot ! Actually, I've recently started private lessons on Skype (I had tried to learn Gaelic on my own years ago but I had given up), however that is true that there isn't any possibility to practice Gaelic where I live. Many people don't even know it exists.
So, I'll wait to have an adequate level to join your group. Meanwhile, I'll study the links you've given me !
Tapadh leat !

Hai a Mhairine
Bho na thuirt thu, ar leam nach eil thu nad fhìor neach-toiseachaidh! Ann am buidheann Skype againn, tha sinn a' cleachdadh 'An Litir Beag' (às an Larach-lìon aig a BhBC). An seachdain seo, cuiridh sinn sùil air LB437. Carson nach cuir thu sùil oirre agus chì thu a' bheil i ro dhoirbh dhut fhathast. Leig fìos thugam ciamar a thèid dhut
Hi Marine
From what you say, it seems you are not an absolute beginner! In our Skype group, we are using 'An Litir Beag' (from the BBC web site). This week we'll be having a look at LB437 - why don't you have a look at it and see if it's too difficult for you as yet?. Let me know how you get on

Re: Group Skype for beginners
Feasgar math !
I had a look at "An Litir Beag" and it is indeed too difficult for me. I've only had a few Gaelic lessons and it seems that I haven't yet enough vocabulary and grammar.
So, I think I'll try to follow regularly "An Litir Beag" and when I'll feel that I could make something out of it, I'll tell you. But I was wondering : how do you work on An Litir Beag during those sessions ?

Feasgar math, a Mharine,
Tapadh leat airson do theachdaireachd. Leig fios thugam nuair a tha misneachd gu leòr agad.
Mar as tric, leugh sinn earran neo dhà às an Litir agus bruinnidh sinn mu dhèidhinn faclan ùra, neo puingean ghràmair. Cuideachd tha sinn a' cleachdadh an leabhar, 'Teach yourself Gaelic'. A' bheil thu eòlach air?
Thanks for your meessage. Let me know when you have enough confidence.
Usually, we read a paragraph or two from the Litir and speak about new words or grammatical points. Also we use the book, 'Teach Yourself Gaelic'. Do you know it?

Re: Group Skype for beginners
'S mise Zack, agus 's mise neach-toiseachaidh cuideachd, ach tha mi a' smaoineachadh gu bheil mi ag iarriadh a dh'fheuchainn seo. Leughaidh mi "Litir do Luch-ionnsachaidh", agus èistidh mi iad cuideachd, mar sin chan eil mi a' smaoineachadh gum bi "An Litir Bheag" ro chruaidh...
Tha mi a' fuireach anns an Ontario, Canada. Tha an "time zone" agam EST. Dè a tha an t-àm àbhaisteach gu bheil sibh a' bruidhinn ri chèile? Dè latha dhen t-seachdain? Tha mi a' dèanamah fiughar ris an còmhradh, ged nach eil mo chuid Gàidhlig glè mhath...
Tapadh leibh-se!
-----------------
I'm Zack, and I'm a beginner too, but I think that I want to try this. I read "An Litir do Luchd-ionnsachaidh" and I listen to them too, so I don't think "an Litir Bheag" will be too difficult.
I live in Ontario, Canada. My timezone is EST. What is the usual time that you all talk to each other? What day of the week? I'm looking forward to the consersation, though my Gaelic skills aren't very good.
Thank you!
(Are there any mistakes here?)

Halò Zack,
Fàilte air bòrd! Bidh ar buidheann Skype a' tighinn ri chèile aig 8f Alba (3f dhutsa?) Là na Sàbaid - 's dòcha gum faic sinn thu aig an àm sin. An t-seachdain seo tighinn, cuiridh sinn sùil air Litir Bheag 438. Is mise 'dougfraser' air Skype.

Bu chòir do sin math... Bidh mi ag innse dhuibh air Skype, gu cinnteach.
Co-dhiù, chuir mi an t-àm sin, 3f, nam chuimhne.
Agus tha mi'n dochas nach eil thu ag iarraidh barrachd uam; Cha do bhruidhinn mi sa' Ghàidhlig a-riamh...
------
That should be good. I will tell you on Skype, certainly.
Anyway, I will remember that time, 3 o' clock.
Also I hope you don't expect much from me; I've never spoken Gaelic before.
