Tha Gun Chleoc ceart gu leòr - " I am using it(masc)" = tha mi ga chleachdadh
e.g. I see you = tha mi gad fhaicinn - (gad = aig do) - I am at your seeing.
You could have said '...ach 's urrainn dhuinn TYG a chleachdadh a-rithist'

'S dòcha gu bheil mise ceàrr, ach carson nach e "Cha robh sinn air TYG a chleachdadh o chionn ghoirid" a bhiodh sgrìobhte an-seo?

Agus bha GunChleoc ceàrr aig an tòiseach, tha mi a' smaoineachadh. Bhiodh "gad" ceart a bhith ann, ma bhiodh ise a' cleachdadh "tha" neo "bha" neo "bidh" neo "bhiodh", ach cha bhiodh sin ceart (aig + do = gad) ma nach bu chòir dhuibh "aig" a chleachdadh idir, mar nach biodh thu san teachdaireachd siud.

Tha mi ag (aig) ionnsachadh -> ceart. "I am at learning"
Tha mi ga (aig + a = ga) h-ionnsachadh -> ceart. "I am at her/its learning"

Chan urrainn dhomh leughadh - ceart. (mòthaichibh nach eil "aig" sam bith ann) "Capable is not to me reading"
Chan urrainn dhomh a leughadh - ceart. (mòthaichibh nach eil "aig" sam bith ann fhathast, ach tha "a" ann mar a bha e san sgrìobhadh os cionn) "Capable is not to me her/his/its reading"

Cha ghabh mi ris. Cha tèid ga a chleachdadh an dèidh 's urrainn, 's e "possessive pronoun + lenited verbal noun" a tha e (in case there is an object). Seall a-rithist air dè an do dh'innis mi do GhunChleoc:

Carson "ga"? Nach bu chòir dha a bhith dìreach "a chleachdadh"?
Bu chòir, tapadh leat! :D
P.S. Bu chòir leam faclan gràmair Gàidhlig ionnsachadh! ;)

@ deardron, post 49: this correction (ga > a) was accepted way back, on 6 April and 10 April - it's actually probably more confusing than helpful to bring it up yet again - duilich.
Zwalla had already covered the relevant grammar thoroughly in the recap in post 48 - mòran taing airson sin.

@ Zwalla: Also in post 48, you're right with the word order (inversion): Cha robh sinn air TYG a chleachdadh (but the original writer presumably has not had - or mastered - this construction yet).

This is for everyone : if you spot a possible mistake (very few native-speakers on here and even they make slips and typos etc :spors: ), by all means point it out / query it / suggest corrections, but keep the tone light, friendly and helpful. We don't want to discourage anyone at all from posting. ALL posts welcome, and all practice useful .:D

Not everything will automatically get corrected, as we are all volunteeers on here - it will depend on who sees things and who has time.

PS: sorry about the edit - I got deardron and zwalla mixed up earlier! :naire:

I have moved the conversation about corrections to a new thread: http://www.foramnagaidhlig.net/foram/vi ... =12&t=2755

As to the concrete grammar issue here, what happened was that I saw a common mistake - that people use "a' dèanamh e" instead of "ga dhèanamh", and I overlooked the "Is urrainn do", which of course changes things to "a dhèanamh". So, I overlooked something and replaced one mistake by the other. Deardron was right to correct me, and Zwalla summarized it nicely.

Well, I read doughlas's post #46 a few times and still wasn't sure that he excluded ga after urrainn, hence I wrote that this case obeyed another rule, that's just it!

Hi Steaphan
Thanks for getting in touch . I should say at the outset that this small group on Skype has been going for over a year now and really is getting beyond the 'beginner' stage. It was started originally for some learners who had been plugging away on their own learning Gaelic from various sources but who had no opportunity to talk to anyone - it never has been a substitute for a beginner's class. We have been using the BBC Litir do Luchd-Ionnsachaidh for some time now, so perhaps you can judge if this is suitable for your own circumstance.
If you are looking for a beginner's class, I suggest you have a look at learngaelic.net - you've probably done that already

Tapadh leat a Dùghlas. Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it. I am really a beginner - with only a few phrases that I know - so I will probably stick to the online learning sites before trying to jump into Skype! :) I have been in contact with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, and I'm thinking very hard about trying their distance course, An Cùrsa Inntrigidh. Mòran taing! R/ Steaphan
