Nuair a thòisich mi air Portuguese ionnsachadh ghabh mi tòrr tòrr faclan bhon Bheurla. Ged a tha coltas rud beag eadar-dhealaichte aca, tha iad ionnan gu leòr, m.e. information -> informação, chan eil seo ro dhoirbh, a bheil? Ann an Fraingis, sgrìobhaidh tu fiù 's information, ged a tha am fuaimneachadh eadar-dhealaichte.
'S e ceist eile a th' anns a' ghràmair, tha sin fìor.

You definitely need to pay more attention to phonetics than with most languages. I have downloaded Akerbelt's guide to reading Gaelic. I have also found this useful:
