Clàran Uireadan ?

Unread post by Tha_Mi_Sgìth »

Does anyone have any resources/advice for "times tables" in Gaelic?

Chanainn-sa "clàran iomadachaidh" (multiplication tables). This has nothing to do with time ;)

Tha "uiread" a' ciallachadh "times" ann an co-theacsa matamataig. 'S e obrachadh matamataig a th' ann. Tha "iomadachadh" a' ciallachadh "multiplication". Dh'fhaodar "2x3=6" fhuaimeachadh mar "dhà uiread trì co-ionann ri sia" no "tha/bidh dhà air iomadachadh le trì co-ionann ri sia".

Tha "uiread" anns na faclairean àbhaisteach, anns an Fhaclair Matamataig bho Stòrlann, agus iomadh àitichean eile, m.e. bhon A' Bhun-sgoil An Ath Leathainn tha CD air a bheil "Spòrs le Uireadan" le òrain mu dheidhinn nan clàran uireadan.

Gabh mo leisgeul, tha thu ceart.

Oh, and another thing. Title Case Looks Really Strange in Gaelic, just write normally for titles. You will probably see title case in some publications anyway, but that happens because not everybody is a typogaphy expert.

Hi there,

Which title case? Where? Do you mean Faclair Matamataig? That's the title of the publication---their case.
Or do you mean the name of Broadford Primary School, or their CD, which they call "Spòrs le Uireadan".
Please tell me which of these you consider bad typography, because I'm a stickler for correct typography.

More more importantly, my post was asking for help with how to say times tables in Gaelic.
Do you have any comment about that at all?

Dear GunChleoc,

The topic title I used follows the example of use on this forum:
Iomradh / ReferenceGràmar, Fuaimean is Gnàths / Grammar, Sounds and Expressions
so I would argue I'm following the local style of the site.

So far, I think your contribution to this lively thread has been:
1. To tell me I was wrong to use "uiread", when in fact I wasn't.
2. To tell me I should not use title case in my subject titles.

I look forward to positive contributions from you, or anyone else! :-)

And

3. I answered your original question immediately and said that I would use "clàran iomadachaidh"
4. I apologized for my mistake and told you that "uiread" should be fine, but that I would not use title case

For some reason, you keep ignoring those answers because you took offense, or because I'm not expressing myself clearly enough. Excuse me for not being perfect, I am not a native speaker either.

I guess I should revise the forum titles. I made those many years ago when I spoke only very little Gaelic.

A charaidean còire

Times table is "clàr nan uireadan", so times tables are "clàran nan uireadan".

uiread and (in some dialects) uibhir are used for "times" as in:3 uiread 2 = 6 (tha 3 uiread 2 a' dèanamh 6).

multiply, -ing - iomadaich, ag iomadachadh
iomadaich 3 le 4 - multiply 3 by 4

etc.

Other Gaelic ways to say the following are:

Adding - a' meudachadh
Subtracting - a' lùghdachadh
Multiplying - a' fillteachadh
Dividing - a' roinn

A dhà 's a trì = a còig or a dhà meudaichte le trì = a còig
a dhà bho dhà = neoni or a dhà lùghdaichte le dhà = neoni
a sia le trì = ochd-deug or a sia filltichte le trì = ochd-deug
a ceithir le dhà = a dhà or a ceithir roinnte le dhà = a dhà
Dèan buil cheart de na fhuair thu!
