I find out about this project called KDE Silk:

The basis of this is to integrate web content into the Desktop and mobile devices without the need to access a web browser. It looks like it is aimed at the facebook generation but could it not also be used for educational purposes which could create an immersive environment so that people could learn Gàidhlig?

What do you mean by immersive environment exactly?

It it's about learning computer terms, you could get that vocabulary by using Firefix Thunderbird, Opera and OpenOffice in Gaelic.

If you mean internet communication with other Gaelic speakers, I guess the best way is to go and find them where they are already. http://www.foramnagaidhlig.net/index.php?page=26

Silk is far from finished and is only available for the KDE platform.

The purpose of the project is to allow online content to be embedded onto the Desktop and it's applications without having to open up a browser or email. That is one side of it. The other side which it doesn't do is provide online content which would have to be done by third parties.

At this stage it is a bit hard to imagine what it is like. I think it could be having a pop up application showing new entries to this forum, or a new twitter or maybe a pop-up which showing a video blog that someone has just posted. With one of these twitters or forum entries, you may find a word that you don't understand and with a press of a button, its explanation downloaded from a Gàidhlig dictionary site is displayed. It hopefully will give that experience of being immersed in the language rather than having to constantly switching from Gàidhlig to English and back. Another example could be the vocabulary program Parley I use could have the facility of using video content from say you-tube to help learn the language rather than having to use English words. There may be other examples, all it takes is a bit of imagination to create the online content that Silk would utilise.

That is really impressive!

That is a good example of merging offline and online content that Silk could do. As well as linking to an online dictionary, it could be linked to a say audio/visual content to bring a piece of text for example as historical document alive so to speak. It is hard to say for definite what it is capable of doing until it is actually released and online content is linked to it.
