Thu/Sibh in Gaelic

I frequently see people using /thu/ to refer to others (in this forum and also other places). I find it kinda awkward to see /thu/ being used to refer to other persons (whom you don't know personally). Personally, I always tend to use /sibh/ to address people - given that, none of my acquaintances o...

Re: Ban Uibhisteach ann an India

माताओं के दिन के लिए! :) Chan eil Cànan Hindì gu leòr agam  . Dh'ionnsaich mi Hindì 'o chionn faisg air deich bliadhnaichean. 'S urrainn dhomh ga tuigsinn agus ga leughadh, ach chan fhurasta dhomh a bhith a' sgrìobhadh (agus a' bruidhinn) ann an Hindì. Chan eil ach Hindì lapach agam a-nise :(...

Ban Uibhisteach ann an India

Glè Innteanach ! The Indo-Gaelic connection spans more than just the one generation in my family. My mother, Anna Sheonaidh ‘ic Ghilleasbaig (nach maireann), wrote this piece for the year 2000 edition of An t-Uibhisteach (also no longer with us). Lifted from the pages of the magazine the pictures ar...

Re: Mo Sgrìobhaidhean

Wilsons-of-Oxford wrote:Cò as a tha thu? Is, literally, who are you from, and it stems from the use of patronymics and clans to identify people. That's how it was explained to me anyways.

But I suppose, the generic "Who are you ?" would be rendered as 'Cò (a) tha thu'.

Re: Mo Sgrìobhaidhean

Does everybody understand te other language, even if the don't speak it? I'm a bit curious, I don't know how close the two languages are. They do. Its like.. whenever I speak to someone, and/or someone speaks to me the language is Telugu. Otherwise, the conversation goes on in Tamil :D Both belong ...

Re: Mo Sgrìobhaidhean

IMO there's nothing weird about Telugu & Tamil :) unless there's some cultural stuff I'm unaware of :D Telugu (my ethnic tongue) is a minority language in my state. My grandparents have the language. But they didn't it to my parents, who grew up speaking Tamil (the majority language). After I w...

Re: Mo Sgrìobhaidhean

Very briefly - "fòn", meaning "phone", is a Very Recent word in Gaelic, so its detailed behaviour is still somewhat idiosyncratic. While your "standard" Gaelic noun starting f<vowel>, when stuck in the tùiseal thabhartach (or prepositional case) after a preposition and...
