[xi] in Gaelic
No worries! I just didn't know enough about the IPA and about the finer details of Gaelic pronounciation to know if "chì" is not as hard a sound as [xi]. :D The thesis is a good one but the author is not a Gaelic speaker herself so it's possible she overlooked the existence of [xi] in some...

[xi] in Gaelic
To clarify, she's talking about how Scots and Gaelic tend to stick to sounds that are possible within their own languages when coming up with vocables (excluding cases of borrowing vocables directly from other languages), so the main question is whether or not [xi] is an actual sound in Gaelic. [xi]...

[xi] in Gaelic
Hi, I was reading an analysis of non-lexical vocables in Scottish music (in Scots, English and Gaelic) and the following claim was made by the author: "a vocable which falls outside the parameters of both Scots-English and Scots-Gaelic is [xi]" (Please forgive the awkward 1980s language na...

Island Voices Moot?
Shaoil mi an toiseach gun robh thu a' bruidhinn mu pagan moot sa Ghàidhlig, haha... Chan fhios agam ma tha mi a' cleachadh (?) Island Voices Moot, ach 's e rud math a th' ann ma tha mòran a' cleachadh Fòram na Gàidhlig ri linn sin. I thought at first you were talking about a pagan moot in Gaelic, ha...

Speaking Our Language on Youtube
It could also be because "Speaking Our Language" is available on the BBC iPlayer, and the BBC can be quite picky about letting programmes be available to those who don't pay the TV license fee.

Are there any films made in Gàidhlig language?
23180 23179 A Shìle, càite a bheil mi a lorg Secret of Kells ann an DVD? (Sa Ghàidhlig - tha mi an DVD fhathast sa Bheurla.) Choimhead mi Song of the Sea anns a' BhBC Alba an-diugh, ach chan eil mi a' lorg fiosrachadh air loidhne mu na eadar-theangachaidhean. Cheannaich mi e bho Amazon nuair a bha ...

Birlinn Ghoraidh Chrobhain
Ah thanks for the explanation! This discussion has been very helpful. We were feeling a bit cheeky so we went with "Clumsy Godfrey" in the end. And glad that I was of help for you, too!

Birlinn Ghoraidh Chrobhain
Halò, a h-uile duine! I'm writing up a museum pamphlet about songs, some of which are in Gaelic. I've been tr*nsl*t*ng the Gaelic titles myself but this one was so strange I wanted a second opinion. The song is called Birlinn Ghoraidh Chrobhain, which I'm currently tr*nsl*t*ng as “The galley of Clov...

A Lilith, tha mi 'n dòchas gum bi seudar agus aran againn airson Lammas - ann an Cill Rìmhinn tha càrnabhail fhamarach againn. Agus 's toil leam a' Ghearmailt. :) Bha mi ag obair ann am Münster an-uiridh. Tha Ryanair carach, nach eil? Chaidh mi a Leòdhas an t-seachdain a chaidh. Bha mi ag ran...

Lowlanders
I've got a question about terminology regarding other parts of Scotland from the POV of the Gàidhealtachd. Does the term 'Lowlander' (or its Gaelic equivalent) only get applied to people from the Lowlands, or could it also be applied to people from Orkney and Shetland as well? In my understanding th...
