Dictionary - very similar words with identical meanings

Anything BBC / MG ALBA (inc. LearnGaelic) is publicly funded; Akerbeltz's site is independent.

a-steach or a-staigh (does it matter?)

It's normal for some folk to use 'a-staigh' for both motion and state and I know a couple of folk from core dialect areas who use it that way, so 'should never' is a bit over the top imo. On the flipside, I don't think anyone would use a-steach for anything but motion, but I'm not certain about that...

Cait' Caite/ bheil

23660 SMO definitely goes down the Càite a bheil route (at least to begin with). Occasionally see it reduced to Càit' a bheil. Just sayin' Just did a 'find' through all my old ACA (didn't do ACI) materials and could only find " càite " written, I'm guessing sticking with one spelling for consistenc...

'S toil/Bu Toil + Verbal Noun

They're probably just focusing on that for now because they like doing things nice and sequentially and there's a wee bit more grammatical baggage that comes along with the non "a bhith" form once you start dealing with direct objects. I didn't do ACI, but we were already expected to know what's goi...

Lus a' chrom-chinn: stress?

If there’s a hyphen, that indicates the stress shifts to the second word.

Access to taic.me.uk website for learners?

23207 Who created it, do we know? Maybe we could suggest moving it or allowing us to take a copy and develop it Was thinking this too. My old class had been in contact with him before about using his materials, he was fine with that. His email's on the website, which you can see via the Wayback Mac...

ceist air "gus / in order to"

Got it — never occurred to me but we have that idiomatic use of 'till' in Glaswegian too (sure it's common throughout Scotland) so that makes sense.

ceist air "gus / in order to"

Tapadh leat, sin na bha mi a' faireachdainn mu dheidhinn nan seantansan dearga.

Ach mar sin — rud eile a bha mi a' faighneachd — am bi, can, "…gus an robh iad toilichte" ag obair mar an dà chuid "…until they were happy" *agus* "…in order that they were happy", no dìreach "…until…"?

ceist air "gus / in order to"

m.e. Rinn mi sin gus an d' fhuair mi seo. = I did that until I got this. Rinn mi sin gus sin fhaighinn. = I did that in order to get that. Bha mi a' smaoineachadh, a bheil ciall gu tur eadar-dhealaichte ann eadar an da 'gus' an sin sa Ghàidhlig, no an canadh tu gur e " I did that in order that I got...

Learning vocab, system? Is there one?

The headword is the nominative singular. The nominative case is just the regular old nothing-fancy-going-on-here case, e.g. 'balach'.

Does Anyone Here Speak Gàidhlig?

A bheil thu ag ràgh nach bi "'s urrainn dhomh Gàidhlig a bhruidhinn" ag obair idir, no gun crochadh e air a' cho-theacsa?

m.e. Dè mu dheidhinn…

"B' urrainn dhomh Gàidhlig a bhruidhinn nan robh i agam, ach chan eil." ?

Tha sin cgl, nach eil?

Unpicking "It must be more than ten years since I moved to this area."

Having trouble unpicking what's going on in this sentence to figure out if it's a gu bheil or gur e situation: "[It must be] [more than ten years] [since I moved to this area]." using: [Feumaidh] + [corr is deich bliadhna] + [on a ghluais mi chun na sgìre seo] I'm sure it's: Feumaidh gu bheil e corr...
