Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

A Mhàiri, tha mi ag iarraidh clas teòirig ciùil ann an Cill Rìmhinn, ach chan eil fànas agam ann mo sgeideal. A bheil thu a' leughadh teòirig ciùil?

Mary, I want to take a class in music theory at St Andrews, but I don't have space in my schedule. Do you study music theory?

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

Tha e a' seinn math. Chan eil airgead agam airson ag ionnsaich piàno an-dràsta, ach 's dòcha ath-bliadhna. Tha mi ag ionnsaich teòirig ciùil ri leabhar à leabhar-lann. 'S toil leam! He sings well. I don't have the money to learn piano just now, but maybe next year. I am learning music theory with a ...

A Mhàiri, bu toil leam a cluich inneal-ciùil, ach chan eil a' cluich mi. Tha mise a' seinn! :) Bha mo chuirm-chiùil chòisire sa' ghiblean. Sheinn sinn ceòl a sgrìobh Beethoven agus ceòl a sgrìobh Paul Mealor ann an Cill Rìmhinn. A Choempa, chaidh mi a oilthigh anns an Stàitean Aonaichte a-bhòn-uirid...

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

"Tha mi trì bliadhna (a dh'aois)." He wasn't answering an age question. There was no "a dh'aois" implied or otherwise. He said he wants to study there "an trì bliadhna", "in three years" if I recall. Just thinking on this some more, I'd understand it being singular if the "sibh" was used as a forma...

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

A Choempa, bidh mi a' leughadh eachdraigh mheadhan-aoiseil. 'S toil leam eachdraigh! Tha mi ag iarraidh clasaichean san diadhaireachd, san Beurla, sa' chànanachas, agus sa' cheòl cuideachd. A Theddie, carson a tha thu ag iarriadh air leughadh cuspair eile? Agus dè b' fhearr thu a bhith a' leughadh? ...

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

Zwalla: - My teacher is from Harris and she uses "leughadh" to mean both reading and studying. I have not heard the word "sgrùdadh" but perhaps it is common in other dialects. It's like how the British often say you read the subject that you're studying at university, eg "I read Classics at Cambridg...

Oh very good, another Gaelic speaker in St Andrews! You can study Gaelic here too. I love St Andrews.

Tha thu a' leughadh ceannan-teagaisg dhoirbhean, a Choempa! Uill, tha iad dhoirbhean rium. Càite am bheil thu a' leughadh? Chaidh mi a Lundin Links an-diugh airson a bhith a' faicinn na tursachan. Tha trì ann. 'S toil leum! Chaidh mi a Elie cuideachd. Bha féille bodaich-starraig ann. :) You're study...

Coempa, what else are you studying? [besides Gaelic for fun]
* Also, I think it's "glè sgìth" rather than "glè shgìth"-- If I'm correct, "sg" doesn't lenite. A few letter combinations are like that.

Re: Hi from Scottish Borders

Fàilte! :)

I'll second faoileag's link to BBC Alba Beag Air Bheag. A fun way to start learning Gaelic is the "Learn a Gaelic song" section. That way you start getting used to how the language sounds, and it's easier to remember phrases when they're to a tune.

Halò, a fhòram! Tha mi air bhith glè trang. Sheinn mi ann an cuirm-chiùil ann an Cill Rìmhinn di-Sathurna. Tha mi agus mo mhàthair anns an Gàidhealtachd a-nis, ach cha chreid mi gun tha Gàidhlig aca an-seo. Tha sinn ann an Siorrachd Obar Dheathain aig an crìoch an Aonghais. Tha i brèagha! A Choempa,...

Who is singing with you? *Note, you probably said in the video, but I don't have enough Gaelic to have caught it!* EDIT: Ah, dh'èist mi a-rith...

Re: Hàlo, is mise Coempa

That sounds like the right way to say "I lived in Michigan." The one bit that might change is "in Michigan", although since it's a foreign word I'm not 100% sure. "ann an" is the usual way to say "in a", but if the noun begins with B, F, M or P, you say "ann am." So it might be "ann am Michigan." Or...
