Re: Hàlo, is mise Coempa

Welcome to the forum!! :) Coming here has really helped me practice my Gaelic, so I think you will enjoy it! "Tha" may seem like it means "yes", but it's actually the present tense of the verb "to be." In Gaelic there is no word for "yes"; you answer questions...

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

A Mhàiri, tha mi ag obair air bhidio eile, ach chan eil mi ag obair seachdain sa chaidh cuideachd. ;) Tha mi air iarraidh a bhith ag obair o chionn fhada, ach bha i ro garbh, agus chan eil mo theaghlach ag iarraidh a bhith ann mo bhidio am bitheantas. Tha i brèagha a nis, ach tha camara aig mo phiut...

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

cha toil le a m - leum means "jump" "Leum" is how it's taught in the St Andrews Gaelic class (rather than leam). It must be an older spelling/Harris dialect. Faoileag, that makes more sense! I thought "corp" looked suspiciously bodily. ;) Halò, Teddie. :) Chan eil mi a...

Re: Hàlo, 's mise Mairead!

Tapadh leibh! I understand the rule about articles in the genitive now. :) One further question on that topic: Say I wanted to refer to a university chaplain as a general position, such as, "A university chaplain has to meet with students" (a la "a policeman has to fight crime). Is it...

Re: Hàlo, 's mise Mairead!

Mòran taing. I know what the genitive is (having studied Latin), but I'm confused about this one article business. In the example above, "the university chaplain", why do I take "the" away from "chaplain" and not from "University"? To me it seems more importan...

Re: Hàlo, 's mise Mairead!

Chan eil e droch! Tha Gàidhlig on ghlùn aig òraidiche anns an sgoil dhiadhaireachd anns an Oilthigh Chill Rimhìnn; tha e à Leòdhas. Tha co-dhiù beagan Gàidhlig aig an seaplain na h-oilthigh cuideachd. Tha mu deich oileanach ann anns a' chlàs na h-oidhche agam. That's not bad! A lecturer in the Schoo...

Tapadh leat. :) Gun tèid gu math le do bhràthair! Leugh m' athair mheadhan-aoiseil ann an Ath nan Damh o chionn fhada. Bha e a' leughadh ann an Emory ann am Georgia, ach chaidh e a null thairis aon bliadhna. Chaidh mi agus mo phiuthar gu Ath nan Damh ant-Samhainn. 'S toil leinn! Ach, 's fhearr leum ...

Dè a tha na pròiseachtean-mara agad, a Wilson? Cha neil mi eòlach air Teddie. :) Dè a tha thu a' leughadh? Tha mo phàrantan ag obair aig oiltigh Chill Rimhinn. Tha mo mhathair ag ionnsaich corp-eòlas, agus tha m' athair ag ionnsaich diadhaireachd. Bidh mi a' leughadh eachdraidh mheadhan-aoiseil am b...

Tha naidheachd glè mhath agam! Ghabh mi an tairgse na h-oiltigh Chill Rimhinn an-dràsta! Bidh mi a' leughadh eachdraigh mheadhan-aoiseil. Tha mi glè shonasach!

I have very good news! I just accepted an offer from the University of St Andrews! I will be studying Mediaeval History. I am very happy!
