"gad fhaicinn" v "d' fhaicinn"

oh no, that wasn't my thinking at all. Poorly explaining myself. I think it makes sense to me now anyway. We'll see.

motion and intent

I know verbs of motion can express both motion itself and intent, like in English, eg: Tha mi a' dol dhan phàirc. I am going to the park. (I am in motion towards the park) Tha mi a' dol ga bhualadh. I am going to hit him. (I have intent to hit him) But I'm wondering about using verbs of motion to ex...

"gad fhaicinn" v "d' fhaicinn"

Right, I think that makes sense given what the particle stands for, thanks. I take it that's a bit of an academic difference though? I see it has the appearance of the same paradigm (gam, gad, …).

"gad fhaicinn" v "d' fhaicinn"

I think I've found an explanation to this in my book, looks like the same as the conditions as for inversion re: direct objects and infinitives, which I still need to internalise, and that in example above with gad it's a direct object of a thighinn , not urrainn . So: Cha bu toil leam a faicinn. I ...

"gad fhaicinn" v "d' fhaicinn"

I'm working my way through the TAIC lessons and came across this in #20 re: idiomatic verbal expressions (toil, urrainn etc.) When the object of the sentence is a pronoun then the pronoun is replaced by its possessive adjective placed before the verbal noun. The possessive adjectives mo , do and a (...

Complete Gaelic

It's a good book. I think its strength lies in its focus on conversational Gaelic around particular themes rather than as a reference, which is maybe why it doesn't have the deepest indexing. If you've not got it, I'd recommend "Scottish Gaelic in 12 Weeks" as a companion. It's more of a grammar ref...

typo in am faclair beag?

Getting round to adding all the comparatives to my adjective flashcards in Quizlet (a big night in let me tell you) and noticed what looks like a typo in AFB. The entry is for 'spraiceil', actual text pasted below http://www.faclair.com/ViewEntry.aspx?ID=E89189D21DB0261A6E26366DA77EE760 spraiceil /s...

Bidh sinn a' togail oirnn a dh'Arainn a-màireach sa campervan againn 'son beagan saor-làithean. Chan eil dùil agam air deag-shìde, ach 's coma leam. Tha mi a' leughadh (air?) San Dùthaich Ùir le Alison Laing an-dràsta. Chaidh e a' sgrìobhadh airson luchd-ionnsachaidh (chan eil e airson luchd-tòiseachaidh ge-tà) agus tha mi a' smaoineachadh gu bheil e glè mhath. 'S e caibideilean glè ghoirid a th' ann agus tha geàrr-iomradh sa' Bheurla ann aig an...

Yes I meant "ga fhaighinn" there not "dha" :naire: , although point taken.

Ah yes, so "air dha fhaighinn" — assuming it's the augmented one I'm after? (mar 'chan eil me dha chreidsinn')

Inversion question

Tha mi air a bhith ag èisteachd ri a' phodcast 'Beag air Bheag' agus tha an ceist agam mu dheidhinn rudeigin. Faicibh air seo (bhon thar-sgrìobhadh an seo ): Cha chreid mi nach eil thu (dìreach) air sin fhaighinn . ‘I think/believe you’ve (just) got that.’ Bha mi a' smaoineachadh gum bu chòir dha a ...
