Some discrepancies between Learn Gaelic and Faclair dictionary for certain verbs, which is correct?

There a few more verbs that I'm finding tricky: Know/knowing - there seems to different ways of saying them, for example 'A bheil sibh eòlach air...?' and 'A bheil fhios agam?'. The former seems to be used in the sense of Do you know a certain person, whereas the latter seems more for facts - am I c...

Some discrepancies between Learn Gaelic and Faclair dictionary for certain verbs, which is correct?

In general, I think, you should try and think less of "which is the correct one" in learning any language. It would be better to think of categories like "which is the most common/generic" instead, because the answer to "which is the correct one" is almost invariably going to be "depends" :priob: W...

Some discrepancies between Learn Gaelic and Faclair dictionary for certain verbs, which is correct?

I've been continuing on with learning more verbs, and was wondering about the verb 'visit'. It seems that it's listed as tadhail/tadhal in the dictionaries, whereas in 'Speaking Our Language' they use 'chèilidh' for 'visiting' (I can't find the imperative/citation form for this, so what would that b...

Some discrepancies between Learn Gaelic and Faclair dictionary for certain verbs, which is correct?

22960 Glad you like it! The only thing I'm still struggling with is when to add the letters after the dash (-) directly onto the citation form to get the vn, and when it doesn't work like that...e.g. for do/make, these are listed as 'dean' (inf) and '-amh' (vn), so would that mean the vn form is th...

Some discrepancies between Learn Gaelic and Faclair dictionary for certain verbs, which is correct?

Ok that mostly all makes sense. I did notice the map with the pins, and was wondering what that was all about. Now that you've explained it, that's a great resource! The only thing I'm still struggling with is when to add the letters after the dash (-) directly onto the citation form to get the vn, ...

Some discrepancies between Learn Gaelic and Faclair dictionary for certain verbs, which is correct?

So I've started learning common everyday verbs in Gàidhlig so I can build up my vocabulary and be able to express myself in a wide variety of situations. I'm learning both the imperative/citation and verbal noun forms for each verb, using the dictionaries at LearnGaelic.net and Faclair.com. First of...

So did this software ever see the light of day? If so, I'd love to try it.

A Michel Thomas style Gàidhlig course? Someone should make one!

I was thinking, Gàidhlig would be SO much easier for people to learn if someone made a Michel Thomas style course for it - basically breaking the language down into it's component parts and explaining all the verb tenses and common everyday language in a simple to follow way in an audio course. I am...

How to find out the verbal noun form of a verb from the dictionary/imperative form? I'm trying to learn all verb tenses

22925 is the stem/root of a verb the same thing as the imperative dictionary form? It depends on who you're talking to :priob: Colloquially these tend to mean the same thing but to a linguist, they're somewhat different things. Ok, but for the purposes of learning Gàidhlig, can we say these are ess...

How to find out the verbal noun form of a verb from the dictionary/imperative form? I'm trying to learn all verb tenses

Ok thanks. I was also wondering, is the stem/root of a verb the same thing as the imperative dictionary form? Because I've heard these terms being used and I want to be sure.

How to find out the verbal noun form of a verb from the dictionary/imperative form? I'm trying to learn all verb tenses

Ok thanks guys. I didn't realise you had to click the drop down menu to find the verbal noun form, I've got it figured out now. I can also see the verbal nouns in Faclair Beag dictionary no problem. It's a pity there are no sound files for the verbal noun forms (so far), but I suppose that will forc...

How to find out the verbal noun form of a verb from the dictionary/imperative form? I'm trying to learn all verb tenses

22916 - you must learn the citation form and the associated verbal noun of each regular verb together because only in some cases can you derive the verbal noun from the imperative with any degree of accuracy by a rule. Mostly it's unpredictable but fortunately, Gaelic speakers are used to VN variat...

How to find out the verbal noun form of a verb from the dictionary/imperative form? I'm trying to learn all verb tenses

So I've decided to learn all the verb tenses in Gàidhlig, and I'm putting them all into a 'cheat sheet' that I'm making with a spreadsheet so that I can easily reference everything and make it easier to learn. Anyway, my first question is: I've been reading about how to get all the tenses in Gàidhli...

Verbal nouns vs infinitives for the present tense, and 2 to 3 consecutive verbs.

Hi again, thanks for the reply. I'd say I'm about lower intermediate level. I'm not a beginner, and can say a fair few things in Gaelic, hold basic conversations etc, but I'm certainly not advanced either. I need to study the grammar of the verb tenses more, and then build up my vocabulary for the m...
