Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

I wasn't sure whether or not to aspirate trang. I did it because I'm female. Is that not standard when referring to yourself? Would you, for example, say 'Tha i thrang' but 'Tha mi/thu/sibh/sinn/iad trang' regardless of gender?

Tapadh leat, a Luchag Bhochd. Bidh mi a' leughadh mu 'mu.' Chan eil mi air Gàidhlig a leugh mòran oir tha mi thrang. Tha mòran cèilichean nan Stàitean Aonaichte againn! Chaidh mi, mo phiuthar agus m'athair a Dhùn Èideann an-dè airson chèilidh air tìdsearan nan Stàitean Aonaichte. Bha mòran spòrs aga...

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

Glè mhath! Am bheil thu air dhol a dh'Alba a-riamh? Agus am bheil thu a' dol a Loch Nis? Chan eil mi air dhol a Ghlaschu idir, ach 's toil leam Dùn Èideann agus Inbhir Nis gu mòr. Tha mi a' dol a Dhùn Èideann Dimàirt oir tha iad a' dol tìdsearan bho an aimsir a chaidh seachad (?). Tha mòran cèiliche...

Meal do naidheachd, a choempa! Bu toil leam a bhith ag ionnsachadh Beurla. Tha mi 'n dòchas gum bi thu a' faireachdainn nas fheàrr! 'S e eadar-theangachadh doirbh a tha ann sin. (Chan eil mi air ga dhèanamh(?), ach tha fios agam gum bheil e doirbh.) Congratulations, coempa! I would like to teach Eng...

A Mhàiri, tapadh leat; tha mi a' faireachdainn nas fheàrr. :) Is toil le na clann 'The Simpsons', mar sin tha iad ag iarraidh ga choimhead a-mhàin(?). Bha e soirbh. 'S toil leam Ovid agus Homer gu mòr, ach chan eil mi a' tuigsinn Laideann no Greugais clasaigeach, mar sin tha mi gan leugh sa' Bheurla...

Bha latha math, a Mhàiri! An toil leat Na Pàipearan Fheadaraileach agus Sophocles? Chan eil mi air dhol a Wyoming. Chan eil mi air leugh Na Pàipearan Fheadaraileach agus Sophocles cuideachd... ach tha mi air leugh beagan Plato, agus mòran bàrdachd clasaigeach. Tha mi air a lèireadh le tinneas an fhe...

Re: An Uiridh

Yes, that's what I've been asking--what the different ways are because it depends! Thanks so much for these suggestions! In the one with a' dol , is that part of it because you went somewhere or is it part of the full phrase of enjoying? With this I'm asking, if you wanted to say 'We had lots of fun...

Re: An Uiridh

Enjoying oneself, so like, 'We had fun' and if that's different from 'the party was fun (enjoyable)'. Would you say, for example, that craic is on you, at you, etc? Or perhaps spòrs, or perhaps a verb?

Re: An Uiridh

Is there a construction in Gaelic that uses spòrs or craic or another word to express enjoying oneself? I did look up adjectives for 'enjoyable' etc. but it's hard to gauge what's the most common way to express this in Gaelic by just using the dictionary and grammar book.

Hi draguakale, welcome to the forum! I love Ireland too. However, this is a Scottish Gaelic forum so if you'd like to learn Irish Gaelic rather than Scottish Gaelic, this isn't the best place. I think there are some people who know Irish here but the focus is Scottish Gaelic. The languages are relat...

Re: An Uiridh

Thanks so much, a fhaoileag! Ah, I think I finally understand the months and seasons formatting. (I had just forgotten that the 't' was part of the article.) My teacher is from Harris, and she uses the English names for most months so she didn't tell us how to format the Gaelic names (ie do you form...

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?

Tha an samhradh ann an Chicago glè theth. Ann an Wisconsin cuideachd. Chan eil ro fuar no ro teth ann an Alba riamh. Tha i tlàth daonnan. 'S toil leam sin. Tha Wisconsin glè, glè, GLÈ fhuar sa' gheamhradh, le mòran sneachd mòran mìosan. Tha Alba nas blàithe. Chan eil fiù 's deigh ann! (Chan eil sa' ...

Re: An Uiridh

I see! The main dictionary I use is The New English-Gaelic Dictionary by Derick S. Thomson (Professor of Celtic, University of Glasgow), Gairm Publications, Glasgow 1981. Any word that's not in there or is of unclear usage, I look up on Am Faclair Beag . My other main source of spelling and vocabula...

Re: An Uiridh

'S toil leam gum bheil sibh a' seinn anns an cànanan sin! Am bheil do choisir anns a' Ghleann Rathais? No 'faisg air'? I like that you sing in those languages! Is your choir in Glenrothes? Or nearby? I have been trying to work out the issues highlighted in your post, a Sheonaidh. Here is your list a...
