Re: Fàilte dhan fhòram / Welcome to the forum

Agus fàilte bhuamsa! :-) An dòchas gum faic sinn thu gu tric an seo - bhiodh sin sgoinneil! Chan eil daoine air an Fhòram cho tric a-nis 's a bha iad ro staing a' chòrona-bhìorais. Tha rudan eile air an inntinn, saolaidh mi, mar a thuigear. Ciamar a tha cùisean anns an Òlainds sna làithean seo? And ...

Re: matamataig---àireamheachd

Living in a place is not a habitual action. You don't do it again and again. That's why it's unlikely to be used in the future tense when you mean the present. Your examples are fine - they ARE repeated actions. Habits, rather than ongoing states. A bheil thu a' fuireach an seo? covers now and in ge...

fuilich, a' fuileachadh is more what a doctor would do - draw blood, take blood from someone, i.e. used transitively.

If you don't like dòrtadh, what about sìl, a' sìleadh? Oooze, trickle, flow.

Re: Duolingo phrases :)

Just trying to make learning fun, therefore memorable - not everyone's sense of humour, admittedly! ;-) But you have now used it / written it / thought about it / told others about it, so you have thereby increased your chance of learning useful vocab, even if likely to be re-used in different conte...

Re: Words or names?

Klondyke, a river in the Yukon, was symbolic of the Canadian gold rush. A century later the word Klondyker came to be used for Russian and East European fish-factory ships that regularly visited the Scottish west coast fishing harbours, chasing the to them big money to be made from mass processing, ...

Re: matamataig---àireamheachd

Like primary school maths in English: 10 take away 4 makes/equals 6. ( You have 10, now take away 4, that makes 6). As a non-arithmetical person, I find most ways of expressing sums illogical or slippery, so I'm all for simple commands. 10 minus 4 is 6 is to me not true; it gives 6 / produces 6 etc,...

Re: Help with a Sentence for a Poem I'm Writing

Literally it means "still not seeing". This is very idiomatic Gaelic usage: Tha iad fhathast gun tighinn = they haven't come yet. Meadhan-latha agus esan gun èirigh fhathast! - he isn't up yet. So as a structure it's fine, but it depends what you mean. If you mean "without the power o...

Re: An Tuiseal Ginideach---feminine genitive forms being lost?

You mentioned number of syllables. There is something in this. Single-syllable nouns are more likely to keep the -e, in speech and in writing, probably because the two-syllable strong-weak/high-low "melody" is a very comfortable one in Gaelic, and seems to round off a phrase less abruptly ...

Bha e uabhasach stoirmeil an seo air a' Ghàidhealtachd an-dè, ach blàth, trì-deug no ceithir-deug Celsius.
Tha e nas fheàrr an-diugh, ach gu math fuar, ceithir C.

It was terribly stormy here in the Highlands yesterday, but warm, 13 or 14 C.
It's better today, but pretty cold, 4 C.

Re: sù/sutha vs sòfa

You can certainly use fòn, a' fònadh as a verb, but there is an alternative form that is often used (and my own preferred one), cuir fòn gu. That to me sounds more idiomatic, on the analogy of cuir litir / post-d / fios gu. It also keeps the word fòn unchanged, so no confusion about meaning through ...
