Re: sù/sutha vs sòfa

I can only assume it's the pronunciation. sù is essentially an attempt to render "zoo" in Gaelic spelling, though it's pronounced with a Z, which Gaelic doesn't have. The S in sù is therefore not a typical Gaelic S sound, and doesn't feel natural with spelling / pron. rules that belong to ...

Re: Gaelic2012

Hi Larissa, You'll see that the references to this are all from 2012 or shortly after. That's because it was a special sub-forum founded early in 2012 as a project from someone at at a University (Glasgow?) to win new learners for Gaelic in the course of that year. It basically was to help beginners...

You'll even hear "eggus". :-)

Just think of all the English speakers you know who pronounce the same things slightly differently - depending on region or personal preference.

Fàilte, Lemonie! :-) Radio nan Gàidheal: https://www.bbc.co.uk/radionangaidheal But don't be put off if you don't understand much for quite a while - that's the usual learner experience. Let it wash over you and you'll get a feel for intonation and sounds. Be glad if the odd word or phrase jumps out...

Re: tr*nsl*t**n of Aigha bàs

The Aigha part could be a mistake or a change over time from the noun àigh , menaing, among other things, good fortune, or (earlier) glory. (AFB, Dwelly). So maybe maybe originally Àigh! Bàs! - Glory! Death! Slogan evolved from sluagh-ghairm, so lots of scope for the history of Ya bass! ;-) sluagh-g...

Re: Scottish Gaelic now available on DuoLingo

I am ambivalent about Duolingo as such, as it is basically earning money via ads for the owners, but all the considerable work, especially the immense start-up work done so far, is done by unpaid volunteers. (All credit to them! :-)) As far as accuracy goes, I have tried out a fair chunk (till I got...

Re: The sound of 'r' at the end of a word

Pronouncing a slender R, especially at the end of a word, as something akin to a soft English TH (a sort of light lisping effect) is very common, so you will often come across it. If you look at the IPA given for air, you see that the final r is given as r and a tiny j . J in IPA is a y sound (as in...

Re: The sound of 'r' at the end of a word

Regional variations aside, the pronunciation of R generally depends on what comes before it (and after it, if not final) - whether it begins the word, broad or slender vowels, combinations with other consonants etc. See Akerbeltz's pages on L, N, R. http://www.akerbeltz.org/index.php?title=Liquids_o...
