Re: Halò a h-uile duine! Is mise Ruaridh
Tapadh leat a Níall! Ciamar a bha thu ag ionnsachadh Gàidhlig? Aig an oilthigh no sgoil, no leat fhèin? Thanks Níall! How did you learn Gaelic? At university or school, or by yourself? Dh'ionnsaich mi i le measgachadh de dhòighean. I learnt with a mixture of methods. Cursaichean goirid aig Sabhal M...

Fàilte chridheil dhut!
Tha mi air mo bheò-ghlacadh le cànanan cuideachd!
I'm obsessed with languages too
Tha Fraingis, Spàinntis, Eadailtis agus Catalan agam. Tha rud beag Cuimris agus Corsican agam cuideachd.

Re: Seòlta Gaelic / Newswatch on Gab
I would like to clear that up for the record. I may make mistakes, but I correct myself when I find one. I'm not just putting everything through GT. Here's an example. Put this text (from my news) into GT, you'll see what garbage it outputs. You are not just putting everything through GT, but I see...

Re: Seòlta Gaelic / Newswatch on Gab
How about looking at this the other way round. You could start reading the news at BBC naidheachdan and write English-language summaries of what you read. People who aren't actively interested in learning Gaelic might find it interesting to see what Gaelic speakers are interested in, and learners wo...

Re: Seòlta Gaelic / Newswatch on Gab
I'm going to be blunt here. I see no value in any site that uses Google tr*nsl*t* to generate "Gaelic" content. You've manually removed some of the most egregious and obvious errors, but clearly (given that even your posts here are run through GT), you simply don't have good enough Gaelic ...

Who exactly is your principle target audience? Trying to appeal to too many people at once opens up the possibility of putting them all off.

Re: Ciamar a tha an t-sìde / How's the weather?
Bha i gaothach gu leòr agus fluich anns a' Chuimrigh a Tuath an-dé. It was very windy and wet in North Wales yesterday. Oedd hi'n wyntog iawn a gwlyb yn y Gogledd ddoe. This raises an interesting point of grammar. In English "very windy and wet" works OK, and the word "very" app...

True or false sa Ghàidhlig
Thàinig e orm nach eil fhios 'am ciamar a sgrìobhar ceistean "true or false" sa Ghàidhlig. Cha bhithinns' ag ràdh "that's false" anns a' Bheurla cho tric ri "that's a lie", agus mar a tha mis' a' tuigsinn an gnothaich, 's e sin 's e breug a th' ann no an leithid anns a'...

Re: matamataig---àireamheachd
There is a song used in cròileaganan: Bidh cù ag ràdh, ùf ùf ùf Bidh cù ag ràdh, ùf ùf ùf Bidh cù ag ràdh, ùf ùf ùf Dè bhios tunnag ag ràdh? etc. So GME kids are very familiar with that pattern. Exposure to the correct pattern doesn't necessarily compensate for exposure to the incorrect one -- it m...

The basic pattern the schools use is X cuir ris/thoir air falbh/iomadaich le/roinn le Y a' dèanamh Z Love or hate it, I think that particular die has been cast. It would be trivial to switch from tha... a' dèanamh... to bidh... a' dèanamh... , though, and the schools then wouldn't be actively expos...

Re: matamataig---àireamheachd
'Fraid I'm not really able to help as I never did any Gaelic maths terminology. Never had need of it, and I'd already heard criticism that the standard school stuff was idiomatically rather translation-y anyway, so didn't really dare to look. Tha aon agus dhà a’ dèanamh (co-ionnan ri) trì = 1 and 2 ...

Re: Comhairle mas e do thoil e
There is no verb "to have" in Gaelic. If you have something it is "at you". "Tha deoch agam" : Tha=is; deoch=a drink; agam=at me.
If you give it away, it will no longer be at you.
