Saoilidh mi gur e mearachd sgrìobhaidh sa tha an dàrna fear is iad a' ciallachadh "co-dhiù". Cuiridh mi fhìn car air dà fhuaimreag gu tric nuair a bhios mi a' sgrìobhadh sa Ghàidhlig.

Tha "trì dhuibh" an-seo a' ciallachadh "trì de+iad" (de na tadhalan), i.e. "trì dhiubh". Chan e "trì do+sibh" (do leughadairean?) :)

Agus co-dhuibh = co-dhiù.

"an dàrna fear" is the first one in Gaelic, the second one is "am fear eile" ;)

Is tha mi cinnteach gun robh trì dhiubh = "three of them" (de + iad) fainear dhaibh.

Tha gu dearbh! Agus tha seo fìor sgoinneil.

Agus dè do bheachd mu dheidhinn seo?
Chan eil Riaghaltas na h-Alba an dùil ceist an referendum a chur ach sa Bheurla
Cha chreid mi nach eil
tha Riaghaltas na h-Alba an dùil ceist an referendum a chur ach sa Bheurla
a' ciallachadh an aon rud, ach tha "chan eil..." nas làidire. A bheil sin ceart?

Hi,

I would be enormously greatful if anyone could help me out with this:
In a novel by Lillian Beckwith, there's a house called "Tigh-na-Mushroomac". It's very important to know what it means... "Tigh-na" is almost certainly "The house of". "Mushroomac"? Mushrooms? A mushroomer? A "mushroomer's house" or "a mushroom-house"?

Thanks a lot!

Mushroom is English. I guess it's an attempt to make a pun with mushroom + mac.

Tha ... sa Bheurla a-mhàin = Chan eil .... ach sa Bheurla.

Cha chanadh tu Tha ... ach san t-seagh seo.

Chì mi am facal "dheadh" gu tric san Naidheachdan BhBC, mar eisimpleir an-seo:
Dheadh a' phròiseict a thoirt gu ìre le companaidh a bhuineas do Aquamarine Power, Lewis Wave Power Limited.
An e an aon rud ri "dheidheadh" no "rachadh" a tha ann?

Ma tha cuimhne ceart agam, sheinn Pòl MacAirtnich (?) "Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona for some California grass". Tha mi nam bheachd gun tèid "dachaigh" bho "do thaigh" no "de thaigh" (agus "dha...", "dhe...") agus chithear, dìreach mar sa Bheurla "I'm going home", "Tha mi a' dol dhachaigh" sa Ghàidhlig. 'S dòcha, san latha a th' ann, gu bheil "dachaigh" air fàs na ainmear, ach dhomhsa bhiodh "Dh'fhàg Jojo an taigh aige" nas nàdarra. Cuideachd, dè th' ann am "feur"? Sa Bheurla, sa cho-theacsa seo, ciallaichidh "grass " "cainb": chan eil mi builleach cinnteach gun dèanadh "feur" an gnothach an seo. An dèidh "airson", mura bi gnìomhair ann, cleachdar an tùiseal ginideach (feòir). Ach ciamar a bhithte ag ràdh "Scottish grass"? Mar as àbhaist, "feur na h-Alba" seach "feur Albannach". Saoilidh mi gu bheil "airson" spot-on an seo, oir tha "for" sa Bheurla an seo a' ciallachadh "for the sake of". Chan eil e riatanach "some" eadar-theangachadh an seo - "cuid" 's dòcha? Mar sin, feuch "Dh'fhàg Jojo an taigh aige [ann] an Tucson, Arizona airson cuid feur [no cainb] Chailifòirnia".

"Thathar mi": "One is me"? "I am been"? 'S e mearachd a th' innte. Nas fhasa ga faicinn sa Chuimris, far a beil "impersonal form" cuideachd - ach far a bheil na rudan eile ag atharrachadh a rèir cuspair, m.e.:-

tha mi - rydw i
tha thu - rwyt ti
tha e/i - mae e/hi
tha sinn - rydym ni
tha sibh - rydych chi
tha iad - maen nhw
thathar - rydys

Inntinneach, cha do bhuail e nam cheann riamh gur dòcha gum b' e sin a chiallaich e. Raineach ma tha? Agus dè mu dheidhinn Eanraig Each Mhaighstir Itealaig? Tha Lusaidh san t-Speur le Daoimeanan furasta ge-tà.

Leugh mi an-seo:
BBC Naidheachd wrote:"Ach cha chreid mise, nuair a thogras an leithid air adhart agus gun tòisich an Sabhal Mòr an seo, nach biadhaich sin a-steach dha na buidhnean eile a tha timcheall an eilein a tha seo.

"Agus biadhaichidh a h-uile buidheann eile a tha sin a-steach dhan t-Sabhal Mhòr," thuirt e.
Dè tha "biadhaich" a' ciallachadh?
Chan urrainn dhomh sin a lorg san Fhaclair Bheag, ach 's dòcha gum biodh iad a-mach air "bait, lure, attraction".
Nach eil iad ag ràdh gum b' fheàrr leis na buidhean eile tighinn a-steach san obair seo, gum bi iad ag iarraidh a bhidh ag obair còmhla ris an t-Sabhail Mhòir?

Agus carson a tha "gun" ann an-seo: "Ach cha chreid mise, nuair a thogras an leithid air adhart agus gun tòisich an Sabhal Mòr an seo..."
Tha e coltach ris: "cha chreid mise gun tòisich an Sabhal Mòr...", ach cha chreid mise gum biodh sin ceart. :)
