Sùil air a' mhearachd 2014

Unread post by akerbeltz » Mon Sep 08, 2014 3:07 pm

Tòisichidh mi sreath ùr gach bliadhna, chan eil e cho furasta ma tha na sreathan ro fhada.

Fear dona dona an t-seachdain-sa... cha do rinn mi fiù cunntadh...

Agus fear nach eil buileach cho dona o SMO fhèin

Lost it. But it was too long anyway. Just the SMO one -

* Ghàidhlig seach Gàidhlig
* Chan eil na dà chànan co-ionnan: feuch "Scotland's Gaelic College" sa Bheurla
* "Ionnsaich Gàidhlig" agus "Learn Gaelic": an ann àithneach a tha a' Bheurla dhà-rìribh?

Leave the biggie for others (and there's lots there!

'S e tòisichear a th' annam, ach tha fiù mi a' faicinn feadhainn. Tha 'Fàilte do' ann an toiseach, nach eil? Tha mi a' creidsinn gur e 'Fàilte gu' a th'ann mar bu chòir.

Fàilte do - Fàilte gu - chan eil mòran diofair ann. There are, however, some real howlers in that notice - keep looking!

'S dòcha gum biodh "gàrraidhean" nas fheàrr, ach tha "gàraidhean" ceart gu leòr.

Chan eil "ghàradh cloiche" ceart, nach eil? Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gur e "ghàr(r)adh ballach" (no "bhallach"?) a th'ann.

Agus am bheil "gach latha' " ceart? Chan eil mi a' tuigsinn an asgair.

Tha "gach latha" ceart gu leòr. The thing means (or is supposed to mean) "Open dawn to dusk each day". But it should be "moch" rather than "mo".

As for the "stone garden", obviously wrong. But as "gàr[r]adh" can actually mean "walled garden", it's a bit of a tricky one.

Cùm a dol!

The part of "gach latha' " I was confused about was the apostrophe at the end of latha. Is that meant to be there?

Missed that - no, it's not. I suspect it's a bit of hyper-correction and misprint, e.g. maybe the first draft said "gach là" - but with the accent wrongly placed and coming out as an apostrophe - and then somebody "corrected" "la" to "latha" - but didn't rub out the apostrophe. Which the "technically correct" form may be "latha", "là is also quite OK.

A few other questionable ones are:

anns a' ghàradh cloiche: would also need lenition on cloiche, as it's jumping lenition

teadhair is a tether, not a leash

àite baidhsagailean > bhaidhsagailean

aig àite dol-a-steach is terrible, idiomatically... far a bheilear a' dol a-steach or something would have been less... English

ri ‘n cheannach: first, the apostrophe curls the wrong way, and surely they're selling more than one veg? So ri ’n ceannach or, sidestepping the issue, ri cheannach or even 'gan reic.

Chunnaic mi seo air duilleig dhachaigh A' Mhòid Nàiseanta:-
Fàilte gu Dachaigh Chultarach na Gàidhlig
An Comunn Gàidhealach - Ar Cànain ‘s Ar Ceòl

‘S e An Comunn Gàidhealach am buidhnean as sinne ‘s aithnichte ann an saoghal na Gàidhlig. Bhon a chaidh a stèidheachadh san Òban ann an 1891, tha I air cliù a dhearbhadh ann an teagaisg, ionnsachadh agus cleachdadh a’ chànain agus air brosnachadh a thoirt dha leudachadh litreachas, eachdraidh, ceòl agus ealain na Gàidhlig...

It's "an t-Òban", but "san Òban". t- comes before vowels in the nominative masculine only. All other cases of t- are before s ;)
So, not a mistake.

Lorg mi tè:
am buidhnean as sinne -> am buidheann as sine. "buidhnean" is in the plural here, so I expect that somebody rephrased something and didn't catch this one.

"tha I": English autocorrection strikes again, turning all the nice i's into I's...

Tha 1 a bharrachd ann, cò lorgas i?
