What a bizarre juxtaposition of formal and colloquial... an-seo shorted to seo but bhur? Then again, it's CalMac, I expected no less... :mhoire:

- stràc throm os cionn a' chiad ì
- sèimheachadh de shràid
- tàthan eadar prìomh-shràid

Eadar dà sgeul, nach ann "Sràid Àrd" nas cumanta?

Chan eil prìomh shràid vs prìomh-shràid buileach suidhichte ach tha thu ceart a thaobh a' chorr. Tha e doirbh doirbh leis a' chruth-chlò sin ... tha i àbhaisteach a' nochdadh mar í agus chan eil fhios dè tha san fheadhainn eile. Murt.

Prìomh-shràid vs Sràid Àrd ... seadh, ged a thuigeas daoine an dà chuid. Cha chanainn gur e mearachd a th' ann.

Agus greasaibh oirbh leis an fhear seo, air eagal 's gun cuir iad ceart e:

An t-Iuchar -- cha creid mi nach nochd "L" an àite "I" gu tric.

Dìth bheàrn eadar "a'" agus "phrìomh".

A bheil, gu dearbh? Bha beagan duilgheadais a rèir "tabhs", ach smaoin gur e "tàs" no "strap" a th' ann. 'S dòcha gu bheil mearachd bheag ann - "Thugadh" = "One gave" (aig àm sònraichte) no "[they] would give" (mar as àbhaist) tra ciallaichidh "bhruidhneadh" "[they] would speak" (mar as àbhaist) no "one spoke" (aig àm sònraichte). Mar sin:-

(a) On a specific occasion, the tawse was given to children who generally spoke Gaelic in school, within ("a-steach don": an ann ceart seo?) the 20th century;

(b) The tawse generally gave children who were on a specific occasion spoken Gaelic (???), within the 20th century".

Ach chan e "mearachd mhòr" a th' ann an seo:-

(c) They generally gave the tawse to children who generally spoke Gaelic in school, within the 20th century.

Tha duigheadas beag le seo: cha nochd "they" (iad amsaa) san t-seantans.

Mar sin, chan eil mi ach smaointinn gu bheil a' mhearachd rudeigin a thabh nach ciallaich an dà sheantans - am fear Berla agus am fear Gàidhlig - an aon rud ri chèile.

Seadh - nach e caomh-ràdh inntinneach a tha ann an eadar-theangachadh Beurla "attitude" airson Ghàidhlig "tabhs"? :priob:

Cha bhiodh tu toilichte idir?

An fheàrr "Bu toil leamsa nan..."?

Saoilidh mi gu bheil Thrissel a-mach air nach eil an dà fo-thiotal ag ràdh an aon rud ann an dòigh sam bith. ;)

Chan fhaic mi mearachd sa Ghàidhlig fhèin, ach nach eil L mòr a dhìth ann an "20mh linn".

Mo bheachdsa faodaidh tu 'nan tug (dug) iad' a ràdh cuideachd.

An toiseach bha mi a' smaoineachadh gur e calque a bh' ann, ach cluinnidh tu 'nan robh mi...' ann an òrain gu leòr, mar eisimpleir.

Tha ailbhean san t-seòmar...

tabhs = sùlaire
tàthas = tawse
