I have my new dictionary, and I would like to know what you think... is it any good or...?

Also (didn't know how to tr*nsl*t*): I bought this from the guy in An Leanag in Glasgow and he assured me it was a good dictionary...

"Beware Gaelic learners! This is the worst Gaelic dictionary on the market and should be avoided at all cost. It is very outdated and in part dates back to the mid 19th century. The English-Gaelic side contains a variety of obscure and outdated English words and the Gaelic-English sides often explains what words mean rather than giving their direct Gaelic equivalent. Save your money and buy a better Gaelic dictionary such as Mark's Gaelic dictionary or Watson's Gaelic dictionary. It is depressing that publishers are still bringing out such an outdated and confusing publication."

I have it, and it's of interest for various academic reasons, but it's not of much use to real beginners / learners.

It's really out of date, if what you want is a modern, multi-purpose, learner-friendly dictionary.

For that I would recommend this one highly:

Once you get further on, then Colin Mark (G > E) and Watson (E > G and , the better volume, G>E) are worth investing in.

Thank you for the recommendation! I can see this dictionary would be good for etymological reasons, but I'll probably buy the one you suggest soon to help me with my learning.

Compare MacLennan:-

soisealta - fond of ease, effeminate, unmanly
soisealtachd - indulgence in ease or effeminacy

with Mark or Robasdan:-

sòisealchd - socialism
sòisealta - social (na seirbheisean sòisealta - social services)
sòisealtas - society

Note that neither Mark nor Robasdan (TYG faclair) give the versions with unaccented o, and that MacLennan gives no versions with accented ò. I'd go further than the already quoted review and state that McLennan is a positive detriment when it comes to learning and understanding Gaelic.

A friend of mine once suggested we apply for funding to have them all bought up and pulped. If you can, I'd return the dictionary and ask for my money back. I know it appeals cause it's bidirectional but it's just about the worst printed dictionary out there.
