Random Writing

Unread post by terrencevane »

Just thought I'd post this random few sentences of narration I came up with over lunch, based on my current gaming venture. (Yeah I admit it--I'm a gaming geek.) Anyway I'd welcome any corrections to my grammar. '-D

Keldin tha bàrd Sibhreach, agus tadhail e le coig càch. Tha iad air cionn airson sàbhail da bràmairean ann Sorath, a' bhadhbh olc.
Keldin is a Pixie bard, and he travels with 5 others. They are on a quest to rescue 2 lovers from Sorath, the evil hag. This is a lot of me relying on Am Faclair Beag. '-D

Chanainnsa:
Tha Keldin na bhàrd Sibhreach, agus tha e a' siubhal le còignear eile. Tha iad air iarraidh airson dà bhràmair a shàbhaladh bho Shorath, a' bhadhbh olc.
Not entirely sure about it though.

Tha iad ag iarraidh dà bhràmair a shàbhaladh ...

or:

Tha iad airson dà bhràmair a shàbhaladh ...

Wouldn't the whole "ag iarraidh tack be merely saying, they "want to save"? I was kind of specifically trying to state they were on a mission; so would "cionn" be the wrong term for that then? Admittedly, grammar is definitely an area I need to work on. '-)

OK re-reading this a bit--you say "air iarraidh"; how does this differ from "ag"? As I look at that, I see something like, "on wanting"--I think I need to seriously work on verb tenses. '-D

No, I meant iarraidh as a noun - it appeared to me as the first one when I searched "quest" here
http://www2.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig/facl ... tairg=Lorg
and I also found it translated (among other meanings) as "quest" in Mark's dictionary. But looking at the list again, perhaps sireadh or tòir would be a better choice, I don't know.

Done some digging.

Tha iad air tòir ... should work.

I don't know the word cionn apart from expressions like a chionn 's gu..., so I wouldn't know how to use it correctly.

Cionn - tabhartach air "ceann". Cha tèid a chleachdadh nas motha ach ann am fossilised expressions.
