There are complicated rules about how to calculate the date of Easter, but essentially it is very simple: It's the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. There's a pagan rule for you.
Seadh, tha mi eòlach air an riaghailt seo.
Ach tha i gu math teòirigeach: cha robh crìochan na Càisge co-thìmeil ris an reul-eòlas fiù 's san cethramh linn, nuair a chaidh na riaghailtean eaglaiseach mun a' Chàisg a stèidheachadh a-rèir a' mhìosachain Iulianaich.
B' ann san siathamh linn deug a bha am Pàpa Gregory XIII air an mìosachan eaglaiseach atharrachadh. Bha mòran daoine agus mòran dùthchannan aig a' strì an aghaidh an atharrachadh sin ùine fhada, agus ghèill a' mhòr chuid dhiubh mu dheireadh thall.
'S ann as trice a tha a' Chàisg san Eaglais againne nas anmoiche na tha i a-rèir a' mhìosachan ùr, ach bidh i am bliadhna aig an aon àm air feadh an t-saoghail.

Yes, I know this rule.
But it's a theoretical one: the limits of Easter were not coincide with astronomy even in 4th century, when the church rules about Easter were fixed according to the Julian Calendar.
Pope Gregory XIII changed the church calendar in the 16th century. Many people and many countries were struggling against this changing, and most of them evetually submitted.
Easter is mostly later in our Church than in it is according to the new calendar, but it will be at the same time thoughout the world this year.

Tha i anmoch, agus chan eil urrainn dhomh a chaidil, mar sin bha mi a' smaointinn gum bidh mi a' cleachdadh a' Ghàidhlig agam. Chan eil mi ag ràdh ro math fhathast, ach tha mi a' tighinn air adhart, pìos gu pìos.

It's late, and I can't sleep, so (I don't know how to say so, in this sense) I was thinking that I'll practice my Gaelic. I can't speak too well yet, but I'm improving, piece by piece.

Nì mi Fraingis airson sgoil an-dràsta. 'S toigh leam Fraingis gu math gu leòr, ach nas fheàrr leam a' Ghàidhlig.

I'll be doing French for my schoolwork in a moment. I like French well enough, but I prefer the Gaelic!

I've been away from FnG for months! The work for my university course is very difficult and I have no free time! I hope my Gaelic is not worse! I though i need practice!
Please check my Gaelic for mistakes :)

Halò Teddie,

Fàilte air ais! Tha Gàidhlig gu leòr agad fhathast, mar a chì sinn! :priob:

Tha mi 'n dòchas gu bheil an cùrsa agad a' dol glè mhath - dè na cuspairean a tha thu a' dèanamh?

Tha ball ùr againn à Anstruther, Màiread - a bheil thu eòlach oirre?

Welcome back!
You've still got plenty of Gaelic, as we see!
I hope your course is going very well - what subjects are you doing?

Tha mi a' gabhail cupal latha air falbh bhon obair agam. Bha mi air obair airson an pròiseactean-mara a'm a' coilleadh an-dè. Gabh mi fois an-diugh.

I am taking a couple of days away from work. I had worked to complete my sea-projects yesterday. I'm relaxing today.

Dè a tha na pròiseachtean-mara agad, a Wilson?

Cha neil mi eòlach air Teddie. :) Dè a tha thu a' leughadh? Tha mo phàrantan ag obair aig oiltigh Chill Rimhinn. Tha mo mhathair ag ionnsaich corp-eòlas, agus tha m' athair ag ionnsaich diadhaireachd. Bidh mi a' leughadh eachdraidh mheadhan-aoiseil am bliadhna.

What are your sea-projects, Wilson?

I don't know Teddie. What are you studying? :) My parents work at St Andrews. My mother teaches anthropology, and my father teaches divinity. I will be studying mediaeval history next year.

Bha mi a' feuchainn bhidio Ghàidhlig bhig a dhèanamh. Nuair a tha i deiseil cuiridh mi i air Youtube, tha mi a' smaoineachadh.

Cuideachd, tha mi a' feuchainn a bhith barrachd an sàs leis an Fhòram. Tha mi ag iarraidh tuilleadh a dhèanamh airson a' Ghàidhlig!

I was trying to make a little Gaelic video. When it's ready I think I'll post it on Youtube.

Also, I'm trying to be more involved with this Forum. I want to do more for the Gaelic!

A Mhairead,

'S e "anatomy " a th' ann an "corp-eòlas" san latha an-diùgh. (Dwelly ann no às. :P ) - knowledge of the body
...regardless of Dwelly...

Cleachdaidh sinn " daonn-eòlas" air anthropology. - knowledge of humanity
We use....

daonna = human
daonnachd = humanity

****************

Wilson,

Abair pròiseact inntinneach! An robh thu aig muir?
- what an interesting project. Were you at sea?

***********************

A Mhàiri,

Tha mi a' dèanamh fiughair ris a' bhideo!
I'm looking forward to the video!

Saoilidh mi gum bi thu a' fuirich airson greis fhathast... Anns a' bhidio, tha mi a' feuchainn a bhruidhinn gun sgrìobhadh na faclan. Tha sin gu math doirbh air mo shon. Agus tha mi cinnteach gun nì mi mearachdan, cuideachd! Ach carson a tha mi air an Fhòram seo, co-dhiù? :P

I think you'll be waiting a little while yet... In the video, I'm trying to speak without writing down the words (without looking at a script). That's pretty difficult for me. And I'm sure I'll be making mistakes, too! But why else am I on this Forum, anyway?

Feasgar math! Dèan mi coimpiutar-saidheans agus tha mi ann an treas bliadhna agam ach tha mi naoi deug a-mhain! Fhalbh mi ard-sgoil luath(?). :P

Rinn mi daonn-eòlas ann an ciad bliadhna agam... cha toil leum e :P Ach bha e glè inntinneach. Smaoinich mise mu eachdraidh nuair bha mi a' roghnaich cùrsaichean, airson tha e inntinneach. Tha caraidean agam a' dèanamh e.

Am gabhaidh thu an cùrsa meadhanach gàidhlig(?) ath-bliadhna? Dèan mi sin, ach cha smaoinich mi gum bheil mi math leòr(?)

Good afternoon! I do computer science and i'm in my third year, but i'm only 19! I left high school early. :P

I did social anthropology in first year... I didn't like it :P but it was very interesting. I thought about history when I was choosing my courses, because it's interesting. I have friends that do it.

Will you be taking the intermediate course next year? I do that one, but i don't think i'm good enough for the class.
Please check my Gaelic for mistakes :)

Fàilte air ais, a' chaiptein 's Teddie! :smeid:

Tapadh leat airson nan ceartachaidhean, Fhaoileig! :D
Seo barrachd dhiubh:

chan eil urrainn dhomh a chaidil cadal

'S toigh leam Fraingis gu math gu leòr, ach nas is/'s fheàrr leam a' Ghàidhlig

mi a' coimhead prògram air mo choimpiutair le mo chat

'S e tòisichear a th' annam cuideachd

Tha an clas na Ghàidhlig agam feasgar an dèidh sin òraid mu Macchu Picchu timcheall ann an Cill Rìmhinn.

cha saor-uair agam -> chan eil ùine saor agam

... nach bheil ...

Bha mi a' smaoinicheadh gun feum mi a cleachdadh. or: ... gu bheil mi feumach air a cleachdadh.

cupal latha: means exactly 2 (unlike English or Irish). You can use on of these: beagan làithean, latha no dhà

Bha mi air obair airson nan pròiseactean-mara a'm a' coileanadh an-dè. Gabhaidh mi fois an-diugh.

a tha na pròiseachtean-mara a tha agad

tha ... ag ionnsachadh - it's not clear that they are teaching, maybe use "ag ionnsachadh do na h-oileanaich". You also often see "a' teagasg"

'S e leabhraichean-obrach ... a tha sna pròiseactan-mara agam.

Fuirich! ach: ... gum bi thu a' fuireach airson (fad) greis

tha mi a' feuchainn ri bruidhinn gun na faclan a sgrìobhadh

... gun dèan

Nì mi coimpiutaireachd. Computing/-er science would be "saidheans choimpiutairean" literally, but we use the shorter word "coimpiutaireachd"

sa/anns a' chiad bliadhna agam / san/anns an treas bliadhna agam

Dh'fhalbh mi an àrd-sgoil gu luath - Nach tusa a tha glic! :mc:

cha toil leam - leum means "jump"

Roghnaich! ach: nuair bha mi a' roghnachadh

airson oir tha e inntinneach. Tha caraidean agam ga dhèanamh e.

An gabh thu ...?

mi sin ... math gu leòr
Oileanach chànan chuthachail
Na dealbhan agam

"Leum" is how it's taught in the St Andrews Gaelic class (rather than leam). It must be an older spelling/Harris dialect.

Faoileag, that makes more sense! I thought "corp" looked suspiciously bodily. ;)

Halò, Teddie. :) Chan eil mi a' tuigsinn coimpiutaireachd, ach tha urram agam*. Tha daonn-eòlas Bhreatainn diofaraichte na daonn-eòlas na h-Aimeireaga. 'S fhearr leam an dòigh na h-Aimeireaga. ;) 'Se "ethnohistory" ann sònrachas aig mo mhathair, air leth na Inca. Gabhaidh mi an clas na Ghàidhlig am bliadhna. ('S dòcha!) Cò às a tha thu? Tha mi à Wisconsin.

A Mhàiri, tha mi ag iarraidh a bhith a' faicinn do bhidio cuideachd. :)

Hello, Teddie. :) I don't understand computer science, but I have respect [for it]. [I did once program my graphing calculator to give me snarky responses, though!] British anthropology is different than American anthropology. I prefer American. ;) My mum specializes in ethnohistory, in particular the Inca. I will take the Gaelic class next year. (Probably!) Where are you from? I'm from Wisconsin.
