"Dè tha an facal prìomhach a tha agad sa' Ghàidhlig? "

Dè am facal Gàidhlig as fheàrr leat?

Bhiodh gaol agam oirbh gu bràth, ma cheartaicheadh sibh na mearachdan sa' phost os cionn!

Tapadh leat!

Tha mi a' dol dhan fhèis ealaine ann am Baile na Uaimhe an-diugh. Chaidh mi do Dhùn Dè an-dè. 'S e a' chiad uair dhomh e. Chòrd e rium gu mòr. Chunnaic mi clachan Cruithnich!

Today I am going to the Pittenweem Arts Festival. Yesterday I went to Dundee. It was my first time. I really liked it. I saw Pictish stones!

Uill, tha mi ag ullachadh m' aodaich airson mo chùrsa aig SMO a thòiseachadh an ath-mhìos. Geansaidhean, seacaidean, brògan, briogaisean is féileadh, léintean, aodaich-oidhche etc. Ach chan urrainn dhomh, no cha bu chòir dhomh màileidean uabhasach trom a phacadh oir bidh an sgrìob ro fhada, eadar plèana, busaichean, trèanaichean is bàta.

A bharr air sin... tha, tha mi air bhioran!! :D

Well, I'm preparing my clothes to start my course at SMO next month. Sweaters, jackets, brogues, trousers and kilt, shirts, night-clothes etc. But I can't, or I shouldn't pack extremely heavy suitcases because the trip will be very long (plane, buses, trains and boat).

Apart from that... yes, I'm excited!!

Obh, glè mhath, a Mharceil! Gun dèid leat!! :D

Chaidh mi do Dhùn Eideann an-dè. Chunnaic mi beagan fèis oire. Chaidh sinn dhan chaisteal.

Oh, awesome, Marcel! Good luck! ... Yesterday I went to Edinburgh. I saw a little of the Fringe Festival. We went to the castle.

"Dè tha am facal as fheàrr leat sa' Ghàidhlig? "

Ceist inntinneach. 'S fior thoil leam i. Tha agam ri beachdachadh a-nis!
Dè mu dheidhinn "samhradh", air sgath 's gun robh e doirbh dhomh a mhineachadh do mo bhean (aig nach eil Gàidhlig) carson a sgrìobhas thu "samhradh" airson "sowroo"! :D

What is your favorite word in Gaelic?

Interesting question. I really like it. I have to think now!
What about "samhradh", because it was difficult for me to explain to my wife (who doesn't speak Gaelic) why you write "samhradh" for "sowroo".

Freagairt mhath! 'S toil leam 'smaoineachadh' oir tha sibh a' smaoineachadh mòran nuair tha thu ag ràdh 'smaoineachadh.' :D

Chaidh mi do Chill Rìmhinn an-diugh oir bha mo mhàthair ag iarraidh leabhar cudromach. Bha mi ag obair ann an taigh-tasgaidh iasgaich na h-Alba sa mhadainn. 'S e an latha mu dheireadh a bh' ann! Tilleadhaidh an ath-bliadhna. Bidh an t-oilthigh a' tòiseachadh a dh'aithghearr! Tha dùil agam ris!!

Good answer! I like 'smaoineachadh' because you (have to) think a lot when you say 'smaoineachadh'. ... I went to St Andrews today because my mother wanted an important book. I worked at the Scottish Fisheries Museum in the morning. It was my last day! I will return next year. University starts soon! I am excited!

Hai a h-uile duine! Duilich cha robh mi ann airson ùine fhada. Bha mi ann an Wyoming airson cola-deug, agus an dèidh sin bha mi uabhasach trang, a' faighinn obair agus a' dèanamh mòran rudeigin eile. Tha obair agam a-nis, ann an taigh-bidh, a' cur fàilte air na daoine a tha a' coiseachd ann. Ach tha e math a bhith air ais an-seo! :)

Am facal Gàidhlig as fheàrr leam? Chan eil mi cinnteach! 'S e ceist dhoirbh a th'ann.* 'S dòcha "àlainn". Tha am fuaim fhèin dhen facal sin àlainn, nach eil?

Hi everybody! Sorry I wasn't on for a long time. I was in Wyoming for two weeks, and then I was extremely busy, finding a job and doing a lot of other things. I have a job now, at a restaurant, greeting the people walking in. But it's good to be back on here!

My favorite Gaelic word? I'm not sure! It's a hard question. Maybe "àlainn". The very sound of that word is beautiful, isn't it?

*Do I say "a th'ann" or "a th'innte" here (since "ceist" is feminine)?

Halò, a Mhàiri! Fàilte air ais. :) An do chòrd Wyoming riut? Agus meal is caith d' obair! 'S toil leam 'àlainn' a-nis. (Cha robh fhios agam a-riamh.)

Tha mi trang oir tha an t-oilthigh a' tòiseachadh a dh'aithghearr. Tha mòran ri dhèanamh! Tha mi a' feitheamh àite-fuirich fhathast. (Tha e amalach, gu mì-fhortanach.) Ach tha mi a' dol a Chathair Aile an-diugh oir tha mi air chèilidh air Ileach. Bidh sinn a' bruidhinn Gàidhlig (beagan, co-dhiù).

Hi Mary! Welcome back. Did you like Wyoming? And congratulations on your work! I like 'alàinn' now. (I didn't know it before.) ... I am busy because university starts soon. There is a lot to do! I am waiting for accommodation yet. (It's complicated, unfortunately.) But I am going to Crail today to visit a man from Islay. We will be speaking Gaelic (a little bit, at least).

- I think you say "a th'innte" in that case. :)

Hàlo a Mhàiri agus a h-uile duine. Tha mi air ais air Fòram na Gàidhlig cuideachd!

As a’ mhadainn, bha mi a-mach a’ ruith. Bha i doirbh... ’s dòcha gu bheil mi ro mì-fhallain (mhì-fhallain?)!

Tha mi ag ionnsachadh beagan Gàidhlig am feasgar seo agus an uair sin bidh mi a-mach airson dìnnear còmhla ri mo chèile/ bhràmar (girlfriend?).

Tha mi an dòchas gu bi i snog :)

A bheil am facal Gàidhlig as fheàrr leam fhìn? Searbhadair! ’S e deagh fhacal a th’ ann.

I’m back on Fòram na Gàidhig!
I was out running this morning. I found it difficult... maybe I’m too unfit!
I’m learning a bit of Gaelic this afternoon and then out for dinner later with my girlfriend.
I’m looking forward to it.
What is my favourite Gaelic word? Towel. It’s a good word.

Tìoraidh an-dràsta :)

Fàilte air ais, a Ruairidh! Chan eil mi a' ruith idir, ach math dhut! 'S fhearr leam coiseachd. Tha mi 'n dòchas gun robh an oidhche agaibh mhath.

Tha àite-fuirich agam fa dheòigh. Tha an t-oilthigh a' tòiseachadh seachdain on diugh. Tha mi toilichte ach tha mi nearbhasach cuideachd. Tha mi a' dol a Chathair Challdainn an-diugh còmhla ri càraid agam oir tha taigh-tasgaidh ann gum bheil sinn ag iarraidh faicinn.

Welcome back, Rory! I don't run at all, but good for you! I prefer walking. I hope your night was good. ... I finally have accommodation. University starts in one week. I am happy but I'm nervous too. Today I'm going to Kirkcaldy with my friend because there is a museum we want to see.

Gun tèid leat aig an oilthigh, a Mhairead! Tha mi 'n dòchas gum bi na clasaichean math!

An-diugh, tha co-là-breith aig mo phiuthar ann. Tha i a' fàs aon bliadhna deug a dh'aois. Tha ise air bhioran...gu nàdarach! A-nochd, bidh partaidh againn agus bheir sinn tiodhlacan dhi.

Good luck at university, Mairead! I hope the classes will be good.

Today it's my sister's birthday. She is turning eleven years old. She is excited...naturally! Tonight we'll have a party and give her presents.

Tapadh leat, a Mhàiri! Chaidh mi do thachartas ann an Cill Rìmhinn an-diugh far a robh mi a' bruidhinn ri oileanaich ùra eile. Tha mi air bhioran! Cheannaich mi agus mo mhàthair rudan airson seòmair ùr agam.

Co-là breith sona do do phiuthar!* :)

Thank you, Mary! I went to an event in St Andrews today where I spoke with other new students. I am excited! My mom and I bought things for my new room. ... Happy birthday to your sister!

* Is it okay to repeat 'do' like that? The first one is 'to' and the second is 'your.'

Uill, chan eil mi ag iarraidh a bhith a' sgrìobhadh dà-fhillte, ach ciamar a tha sibh, a h-uile duine? Tha an t-Sultain trang gu tric agus chan eil mòran a' sgrìobhadh anns an fhòram.

Thòisich mi aig an t-oilthigh, agus 's toil leam e. Bidh an clas na Gàidhlig a' toisicheadh an t-seachdain a-rithist.

Well, I don't want to write twice, but how are you, everyone? September is often busy and many people don't write on the forum. I started university, and I like it. The Gaelic class starts this week again.

Halò a Mhairead!

Na gabh dragh ma bhios tu a' phostadh dà thuras às dèidh a chèile! Tha sinn uile toilichte nuair a bhios post ùr idir ann!

Tha amharas agam gun robh cuid mhòr dhinn an sàs san Reifreann air dòigh air choireigin - a' smaoineachadh air, a' deasbad mu dheidhinn air-loidhne no còmhla ri caraidean, no ann an coinneamhan no a-muigh air an t-sràid. Tha mi fìor moiteil à ciamar a chaidh a h-uile rud. Cha mhòr 90% a' bhòtadh! Nach sgoinneil sin! Deamocrasaidh beò!

Tha "do do" ceart gu leòr an seo.

Ach tha "dà-fhillte" beagan neònach ("twofold" sa Bheurla) agus na bhuadhair seach na cho-ghnìomhair - b' fheàrr leamsa "dà thuras".

*****************************************************************************************************************************

Don't worry about posting on two consecutive occasions. We're all happy when there's any new post at all!
I suspect that many of us were involved with the Referendum in one way or another - thinking about it, discussing it online or with friends, or in meetings, or out on the street. I am truly proud of how it all went. Nearly 90% turnout! Wasn't that marvellous! Living democracy!

"do do" is fine in this context.
But "dà-fhillte" is a bit strange ("twofold" in English), and is an adjective not an adverb. I would prefer "dà thuras".

Tapadh leat, a fhaoileag. Bha an Reifreann glè inntinneach; bha mi iomagaineach ach air bhioran cuideachd. Chan fhaod mi a bhòtadh anns an Alba, ach tha mi moiteil cuideachd oir bhòt mòran. Nise, tha obair agam airson na clàsaichean agam. Tha mi a' leughadh Angla-Sasannais (no Seann-Bheurla? Chan e am facal as iomchaidhe a th' ann an 'Angla-Sasannais'). 'S toil leam e gu mòr. Leugh sinn aincheistean. Dè tha sibh a' dèanamh?

Thank you, faoileag. The Referendum was very interesting; I was anxious but excited too. I cannot vote in Scotland, but I am proud too because many voted. Now, I have work for my classes. I'm studying Old English (Anglo-Saxon is not the most appropriate word). I like it a lot. We read riddles. What are you all up to?
