Tha an t'òran seo glè bhòidheach! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH3nL17FASY

This song is very beautiful!

Tha an piàno inntinneach. Chan eil me a' cluichd an piàno, gu mì-fhortanach. Tha mi a' cluichd giòtar, agus tha mi a' seinn; chan eil mi glè mhath.

The piano is interesting. I don't play piano, unfortunately. I play guitar and I sing; I am not very good.

Tha e a' seinn math. Chan eil airgead agam airson ag ionnsaich piàno an-dràsta, ach 's dòcha ath-bliadhna. Tha mi ag ionnsaich teòirig ciùil ri leabhar à leabhar-lann. 'S toil leam!

He sings well. I don't have the money to learn piano just now, but maybe next year. I am learning music theory with a book from the library. I love it!

Hi Zwalla,

In the 'is' category (about 2 pages ago) you gave several examples, and this one was not correct, for StA is a lovely place':

'S e Cill Rimhann àite brèagha

Either: 'S e àite brèagha a th' ann an CR (as you gave),

OR

Is àite brèagha CR. (formal, literary)

(NB: General before particular; and 'is' is never followed directly by a proper noun or a definite noun.)

You could also say 'This lovely place is StA.' - different meaning/emphasis.
'S e CR an t-àite brèagha seo.

The full works in TAIC 19, but really it takes years to get your head round all the ramifications, so take it a bit at a time. :priob:

Also, the 'Tha e na shaor' , 'Tha i na banaltram' construction is strictly speaking used to indicate temporary occupations, or a role that one has in a given situation. The standard way of giving your regular job or the profession you were trained for is 'S e dotair a th' annam.

'S e seinneadair-opara a th' ann, ach tha e na dhràibhear-tacsaidh an-dràsda.

= He's a (trained) opera-singer but he's (working as) a taxi-driver just now.

Hope that clarifies. :D

It also gets round one usage of 'studying':

Tha e na oileanach ann an CR. He's (currently) studying in StA.

BTW, 'sgrùdadh' only means 'study' in the sense of examine, inspect, look closely at, do research into. (Think of the English word 'scrutinise'.)

'ag ionnsachadh' can also be used for studying a subject, or simply 'a' dèanamh'.

Tapadh leibh!

I suppose this is why I always give disclaimers when giving "corrections" :naire:

A Mhàiri, tha mi ag iarraidh clas teòirig ciùil ann an Cill Rìmhinn, ach chan eil fànas agam ann mo sgeideal. A bheil thu a' leughadh teòirig ciùil?

Mary, I want to take a class in music theory at St Andrews, but I don't have space in my schedule. Do you study music theory?

Tha e là mhòr an-diugh! Cemigeachd! Tha mi glè nearbhasach, ach bha mi a' leughadh mòran ceimigeachd. Tha ceimigeachd glè dhoirbh! :urnaigh: :urnaigh:

It's a big day today! Chemistry! I am very nervous, but I studied chemistry greatly. Chemistry is very difficult.

:gulach: Tha mo làmhan glè fhallasach.

My hands are very sweaty.

I'm trying so hard to stay calm and collected, but this exam is so important. This exam is the catalyst in my passing or failing high school. I am not joking.
