Geòbadh - gape with the mouth

Tha geòbadh a' tighinn air an latha.

Mar a tha an t-earrach a' dlùthachadh oirnn, tha na làithean a' fàs nas fhaide (rud beag), agus mar sin tha geòbadh a' tighinn air an latha.

Tha an abairt seo coltach a thaobh cèille ri "Ceum a' ghille-chonnaidh air an latha".

Ceum a' ghille-chonnaidh bho an dèidh na Bliadhn' Ùir, agus nuair a bhios làithean a' fàs fiù 's nas fhaide faisg air an earrach, canaidh aid "tha ceum-coilich a' tighinn air an latha".

gille connaidh = fuel lad
By New Year's Day the nights have begun to shorten considerably. It is a Gaelic saying that there is "an hour of greater length to the day of little Christmas" (uair ri latha Nollaige Bige), and this is explained to be "the hour of the fuel lad " (uair a' ghille chonnaidh). The word uair means "a time" as well as an hour; and the meaning perhaps is, that owing to the lengthening of the day the person bringing in firewood has to go one trip less frequently for fuel to make a light.

Ò rud eile, 's e ceum beag a th' ann an ceum-coilich. (a short step) Agus leis gur ann beagan an dèidh na bliadhn' ùir a tha ceum-coilich a' tighinn air an latha, b' e sin a b' adhbhar do robhar a' toirt "ceum-coilich" air an latha mar a bha e a' fàs beagan na b' fhaide le beagan a bharrachd solais ann.

Inntinneach.

B' e an Nollaig Bheag a b' ainm don Bhliadhna Ùir ann an cuid de dh'àiteachan.

Tha seanfhacal cumanta coltach Teiceach ann cuideachd, a tha ag ràdh "Na Nový rok o slepičí krok, na Tři krále o krok dále, na Hromnice o hodinu více." - "Air Là na Bliadhn' Ùire, le ceum circe, air Là nan Trì Rìghrean, le ceum nas fhaide, air Fèill Brìghde [or rather, on Candlemas], le uair tuilleadh."
