Study reveals Gaelic student shortfall

Up to 860 people would have to become bilingual in Gaelic each year if the decline of the language was to be halted, according to a study.

A Royal Society journal published the research which found the language was in danger of becoming extinct.

However the authors said it could be saved by copying initiatives which had succeeded in revitalising Welsh. ............

They talk about a shortfall, but don't bother to mention what it is. Hardly a small oversight.

Harrr... That's roughly the amount that the Basque Regional Gov't invested in its project Lanhitz last year (to increase the use of Basque in the workplace). They spent €1.3m on promoting Basque in society, €5.7m on promoting Basque in the media (that doesn't include EITBs budget), €1.6m on Basque and new technologies and €2.5m on supporting the use of Basque in the private sector. The Berripapera makes for fun reading if you read Euskara or Spanish (http://www.euskara.euskadi.net/r59-bp/es/)

Wonder why we're not going anywhere?

How many learners become fluent each year? 20 ? 50? 100? more than that?

Here or in the Basque Country?

It's not the total sum but in 08/09 there were 38.957 adults in HABE run adult courses (in about 100 centres, some 1,500 teachers). Of these 16,157 registered for a course leading to one of the 4 certificates of fluency (as in, they all certify fluency but at different levels from "fluent to work in to fluent to teach in" (paraphrasing)). Of these 7055 passed the exam. Which indicentally means that the certificate you get is actually work something, the tests are hard to harsh.

The other students study at various levels from night classes to the intensive 5 days a week for a month immersion models (levels 1-12). I can't put my hand of the figure of adults reaching fluency each year but I'd say that between 8,000-12,000 is a safe estimate.

tl Akerbeltz.

Chan e naidheachd ùr a tha anns an rannsachadh seo, a-rèir Alasdair MhicCaluim chòir (Air iomall an iomaill _ Revitalising Gaelic in Scotland - 2006 - Dundedin Academic Press td 187)
Tha co-dhiù 750 neach-labhairt Gàidhlig a dhìth oirnn gach bliadhna guan na h-àreamhan a chumail aig an ìre far a bheil iad an-dràsta. Feumaidh an luchd-labhairt ùr seo a thighinn bho luchd-ionnsachaidh agus chan ann bho na coimhearsnachdan traidiseanta oir tha na h-àireamhan de luchd-labhairt Gàidhlig agu san ìre tar-chuir ro ìosal a-nis.

agus td 193:
Chanainn-sa gu bheil eadar 100 agus 200 a' fàs fileanta gach bliadhna aig a' char as motha.

Eadar 100 agus 200 an e beachd caran dòchasach a bha sin?

So, tha feum againn air còrr is 400 gu 850 daoine ùra. Uill, nach eil còrr is 1,300 a' dol tro Sabhal Mòr gach bliadhna? Cia mhead a bhios a' faighinn sgilean mhath às? Cuideachd, tha còrr is 10,000 clann a' dèanamh na Gàidhlig sna sgoiltean a-nis - tha mi cinnteach gum bi buannachadh a' tighinn às a sin.

Chì sinn dè thachras an ath-bhlian' leis a' chunntas-sluaigh.

A' dol tro, no a' dol gu?

That móran a' dol dha airson laithean-saora agus pios beag "culture vulture feel good factor". Bidh iad a' deanamh an aon cùrsa, bliadhna as déidh bliadhna.

Chan eil dith cùrsaichean oirnn, 's e an cleachdadh a tha chuir dragh oirnne. Tha Gàidhlig gu tur gun feum an-drasta. 'S urrainn dhuit dol dhan Mòd gun Gàidhlig. 'S urrainn dhuit dol gu Ceòlas gun Gàidhlig. 'S urrainn dhuit dol gu cuirmean ciùil Gaidhealach gun Gàidhlig. 'S urrainn dhuit coimhead air BBC Alba gun Gàidhlig. 'S urrainn dhuit dol gu coinneamhan coimhearsneachdan na Gàidhlig... gun Gàidhlig.

Thathar gu bheil siud suidheachadh math air sgaths gu bheil Gàidhlig "open to everyone" mar sin. Bollags. The biggest problem I had with learning Gaelic has always been the ease with which I can fall back on English whenever I run out of words of even if I'm just in a bit of a rush... like now.

Ceòlas really irritates me at times because of the "English habit" many of the staff and helpers get into. They're being friendly, they're being open, but it's not good for the Gaelic.

Seo an aithisg gu lèir:]

tl GC ach feumaidh mi a ràdh gu bheil cuid den bheurla gu tur seachad orm agus an e Algebra a tha siud?

@ Nìall - Gàidhlig gun Ghàidhlig 's e gnìomhachas a tha sin ach gu mì-fhortanach tha e a' dol fon bhratach Ghàidhlig.

Ged a tha "dol troimhe" cudromach, 's cudromaich "ruigsinn fileantachd" agus cha cho-ionnan an dà rud. Chan fhaic mise 200 fileantaich ùra gach bliadhna. Ma tha, cà bheil iad?
