Siubhal a' Choire

Unread post by MacIain »

Greetings All,

I'm trying to find the words to George Campbell Hay's 'Siubhal a' Choire' but I've only been able to find the middle stanza. The musicality of it has so captured me that I'm desperate to find the rest of the poem. Does anyone have a copy they could share?

Tapadh leibh,

Seumas.

I couldn't find anything published on the net, but you can get a paperback edition of his collected works on Amazon.

It's on the expensive side to buy the Collected Works,

abe books:
http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookD ... 7%26y%3D17

Amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collected-Poems ... =1-1-spell#_

but you can actually scroll to that poem on this Amazon page:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collected-Poems ... 0748616217

It only appears to have 2 stanzas.

You can also see it here:

The poem has been turned into a song by Griogair Labhruidh (which I am completely entranced by), I've tried transcribing it but there are too many words I don't know and his accent is not what I'm used to so I thought finding the poem would be a short-cut to working out what the words are.

Akerbeltz' library to the rescue :)

Thog sinn a-mach air a' mhachair uaine
chuir sinn a' Gharbhaird ghailbheach ghruamach
leum on iar-dheas sìontan cruaidh oirnn
Thog i ceann ri ceann nam fuar-thonn
an tè dhubh chaoil nì gaoir 'na gluasad;
thog i seinn is rinn i ruathar.

Shìn i a sgòd le cruas 'na cruadhach
shìn i taobh ri taobh nan stuadhan
shìn i ceum a cheumnadh chuantan.
Bhuail i beum le beul 's i tuairgneadh
thug is sad le sgar a guailne
ghearr i leòn le sròin 's i luasgan.

Eilean Aoidh b' aoibh a nuallan
Àird MhicLaomainn a gaoir gum b' uaibhreach
os cionn na h-Innse sheinn i duanag.
Cha robh 'nar sùilean ach smùid a stràcan
cathadh is sìoban o chìr nam bàirlinn
cha robh 'na cluais ach fuaim a stàirneil.
