'Spending on Gaelic is unsustainable'

Unread post by Gràisg »

'Sir, I would like to correct the facts as portrayed in the letter from Beth Frieden (Courier 2.2.10).

The considerable amounts being spent in the name of promoting Gaelic are just the sums being spent by Highland Council but must take into account money being spent by others such as Bord Na Gaidhlig, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Scottish Government and all the other publicly-funded bodies.

It is perhaps appropriate now to put the full spending over the past five or 10 years on the table. It may surprise Beth Frieden to learn that the total is many many millions and rising each year, despite the considerable cut backs now being imposed throughout the public sector. She should also look at the vast sums being squandered by several of these bodies each year, for example £250,000 on a Gaelic version of Facebook, with about 1500 people having registered!'
