Latha math dhuibh!

'S mise Eilidh. Tha mi à St Petersburg, an Ruis.
How would you say "St Petersburg" in Gaelic? Tha mo charaidean à Mosgo (from Moscow) ag ràdh "Dùn Pheadair".

Thoisich mi ag ionnsachadh na Gàidhlig ann an 2009 -- thanks to Gaelic Society of Moscow and their forum.

Now we three of us (from SPb, Moscow & Krasnodar) are learning Gaelic with "Tearch Yourself Gaelic" by Robertson & Taylor.
(Tha sinn aig Aonad 11 an-dràsda).

Your forum is very useful indeed, and I've already found some explanations I needed very much.

Gabhaibh mo leisgeul -- my English in not very well not to mention my Gaelic...

Fàilte dhan fhòram. 'S math a rinn thu. Cum ort. :moladh:

Welcome to the forum. You've done well. Keep it up.

'S coltach gu bheil Dùn Pheadair ceart (no Phèadair).

It's likely Dùn Pheadair is correct. (or perhaps Phèadair)

Bhiodh Dùn Pheadar no Dùn Phàdraig ceart gu leòr.

Cha bhiodh Dùn Pheadair no Dùn Phàdraig ceart idir. Dè th' anns an ainm? An e ainm Ruisis a th' ann? Chan e: 's e ainm Gearmailtis a th' ann. Mar sin, ma bhios "St. Petersburg" ceart sa Ruisis, bidh e ceart sa Ghàidhlig cuideachd. Dè an t-ainm sa Spàinnis - Ciudad San Pedro? Chan eil mi a' creidsinn gur e. Agus sa Bheurla - St. Petersborough? No ann am Beurla na h-Alban St. Petersburgh? Chan e. Nam b' e "Petrograd" an t-ainm, sin e ainm Ruisis (mar a bha e rè ciad cogadh an t-saoghail), 's`math a dh'fhaodte gum biodh "Dùn Pheadair" amsaa ceart gu leòr. Ach air sàillibh gur e ainm Gearmailtis a th' ann, a thèid a chleachdadh gun atharrachadh sa Ruisis, chan eil mi a' creidsinn gum biodh e ceart eadar-theangachadh fheuchainn sa Ghàidhlig. Dùn Lenin?

German name that went without change into Russian? According to Wikipedia

"?????????????? Sankt-Piter-Burch ???? ????????? ???????????? ???????????? Sint-Petersburg, ??? ??? ???? ??? ? ?????? ????????? ????? ? ???????????. ? 1720-? ???????? ?????-?????-???? ???????? ?? ?????-????????? (??????? ? ???. Sankt Petersburg)."

"The initial Sankt-Piter-Burch was an imitation of the Dutch pronunciation Sint-Petersburg, as Peter lived and studied at one time in the Netherlands. In 1720 the name ?????-?????-???? was changed to ?????-????????? (close to Ger. Sankt Petersburg)."

Also I don't see the second s in ?????-?????????...

Seaux, seann ainm Duitsisa dh'atharraich muintir a' bhaile gu rudeigin car Gearmailtis - dad sam bith Ruisis. Fuirichidh mi mar roimhe - mar sin, cha bhi "Dùn Pheadair" amsaa ceart.

Ach, tha agam ri ràdh gur e spòrs math a th' ann an eadar-theangachadh, fiù 's far nach biodh sin ceart. Dè mu dheidhinn:-
Islamabad
Beijing
Tokyo
New York
Chicago
Toronto
Buenos Aires
...amsaa

Gèam èibhinn...
Beijing - Prìomh-bhaile an Tuath
Tokyo - Prìomh-bhaile an Ear
Chicago - Uinnean Fiadhaich no Creamh Fiadhaich
Toronto - Àite Chraobh nan Seasamh san Uisge (ainm snog!)
Buenos Aires - Gaothan Matha
Dè mu dheidhinn North Berwick no Peebles? :priob: (No Praha...)

Co-dhiù, mar a thuirt mi o chionn mìosan, 's fheàrr leam nuair a tha fuaimneachadh an ainme choigrich cho faisg sa ghabas air an ainm a tha na daoine a' tha a' fuireach san àite a' cleachdadh . B' fheàrr leam Sangt... Peterburg, 's dòcha, nam biodh an t air a leughadh mar [t?] seach [t?].

Mòran taing!
Tha sin glè inntinneach.
It's very interesting indeed.

Yes, the name of our city was Russian only during the short period, and very soon the name of that terrible person came.
Now it's become foreign once more. (It is also a center of the region named "????????????? ???????" yet, and maybe forever).
It is not German really, I think, only it's like German; and in English it gets the second "s" -- I do not know why.
We call it "?????" also, for short.

Many of the Russian think that Russian name would be better for our second capital city.
I do not think that "ainmean àiteachan" are necessary to be very similar for the native variant -- in case when the tradition supports the other one.
But here there are no tradition, so I guess, to invent it is a difficult thing.

Tha mo charaidean ann an Mosgo a' smaoineachadh gu bheil iad a' dèanamh seachadas ùr -- they try to create such a tradition.
We'll see the result...
