Here's some incentive to learn Gàidhlig! ;-)

Unread post by Lìosa »

Write in to a DJ on Radio nan Gàidheal, and have him mention you on the radio. Then wonder what in the world he said about you! :P He was obviously excited, though, about having listeners in M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I! :priob: I got ONE word of the whole thing in Gàidhlig...post-dealain...I think. I'll need to go back and listen again (many times) once they post it on the webpage.

My son was thrilled, though..."People all over the WORLD heard my name!" :D

I was listening ;)
Derek's a lot of fun to listen to. I was teasing him about his attempt at an accent :)

Meal do naidheachd gu dearbh!

Tapadh leat...so yours is the other name he was saying over and over! :priob: And he did a pretty good job with the accent...better than him trying to spell Mississippi!

I don't understand half of what Derek says, but like you said he's a lot of fun to listen to. I spend a lot of time with a dictionary trying to figure out what he writes, so I "get" a little more from the Facebook page than from the radio at this point. It felt a bit silly having him play those songs today, but if you saw my Facebook post, I really needed a pick-me-up today, so it was good. :)

I don't understand everything either, but as I learn I pick up more and more, plus it's a wee bit of a connection with home (Tha mise à Alba).

Is this radio station on-line? If so, how do I listen and does it just stream or are set programmes of it downloadable? My Internet is too slow to stream.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radionangaidheal/ :)

It does stream, but it also has most of the programs available to listen to for a week after they're aired.

I've seen it has a low bandwidth version for some programs, maybe your internet can manage that.

*gasp*
This made my day! The last time I tried to use BBC iPlayer it wouldn't work in my area so I had completely given up on it and hadn't tried it in a long time :/

Tapadh leibh! :farmad:

There are also applications out there for your smart phone (if you have one).
I use the Tune-in Radio application which already knows about RnG, and I use it even over 3G (it's pretty efficient in terms of it's use of bandwidth). I use it to listen to Siubhal gu Seachd most days :)

You can also get BBC Alba and other streamed / watch again TV channels from the UK if you have a VPN, eg Expatshield, VPNUK - there was a thread about that somewhere - I will have a look and post a link if I find it... :priob:

There are also Gaelic YouTube videos which you can download straight to your computer if you install this: http://fastesttube.kwizzu.com/

Here's a nice version of Runrig's Alba for the launch of BBC Alba http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs07sYQqc1c

I have also started a collection of Gaelic Videos on Youtube:

www.youtube.com/user/foramnagaidhlig

I am not so much concentrating on music there, since people will find that easily enough on their own.
