But remember, locals may call / have called it the shorter version in everyday speech.


This site's version drops the final 'e':

And even AAA leaves it out in the Gaelic for Kildonan - Cill Donnain

So on balance go for the full works or leave the double L at least (which affects the pronunciation slightly - there's a bit of 'y' sound with a double L..

Hello to everyone.

My name is Stewart, I come from Scotland ( Bathgate ? I dont know how to put this in Gaelic )

I'm 62 yrs old and very much a beginner in learning the Gàidhlig language. My hope is to retire to the west coast ( with my wife ) in a couple of years time - hopefully the islands, and would love to be reasonably fluent by that time. At least enough not to embarrass myself too much
Being able to converse in the 'mother tongue' would be an achievement- having dreamed of being able to do so for many years. Now that I'm retired I have the time to study and learn.

But as you are between Edinburgh and Glasgow, you should have access to the Gaelic-learning facilities and Gaelic events in both places.

This is a useful guide to Gaelic events in Edinburgh, and you can ask to go on their email list (June here, but mail John for latest):

Online / phone courses also available from SMO and AGA. They are work-intensive but effective and have steep learning curves.

Given that you have the time, and are lucky enough to be in a place with access to courses and groups, I would urge you to learn in person, not alone with the internet, as many on here are forced to do for distance or work reasons.

faolleag .. tapadh leat - for the welcome ( i think yours means " welcome to the family ? ) and the information/links. I suspect you are correct in how I should go about learning, as I now have many " Gàidhlig " tabs open which is becoming a wee bit overpowering.

I was wondering if the fòram ever included audio 'conversations / posts ' ??

If you look at the top of the page where it says "Wordlink", you can link this page into a selection of online dictionaries. You can then choose from which language to which language, then choose a dictionary. Then, all you have to do is click on a word! As a dictionary, I recommend Am Faclair Beag. Link also on top of this page.

We don't have an audio facility on the forum, so if you want to have an audio conversation with other members, you will need to sign up with Skype. A number of us are on there.

Except for the audio files, this is HTML. Audio files always need some form of player.

(I always gave up because it's hard and there is nobody who could explain it to me.

You're from HUngary! That's interesting. THere are people here from Russia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Australia, Canada, the USA... (any other places?) - even from Scotland!

Look at the links along teh top of the forum - very useful ones, including an online dictionary (Am Faclair Beag). Click on Goireasan (resources) and Ceanglaichean (links) too.

There are also people interested in speaking on Skype - see the thread in the forum below.

And we are all happy to help on here with questions, so please try things out, however simple!
