Dè tha a'cheist le "eadar-theangachadh" ann am Beurla? Chan eil daoine sin ag-radh an-seo idir.

What's the problem with "eader-theangachadh" in English?

Chuir mi e anns an word censor airson rannsachaidh na Google a mealladh. Chan iarr sinn an àite seo a chur fodha le luchd na tatù, a bheil? :spors:

It is set up in the word censor to fool google searches. We don't want this place swamped by the tatt**-crowd, do we? :spors:

Chan eil mi a' tuigsinn dè an canan a tha thu ag iarraidh... Ciamar a chanas mi / Dè an t-ainm a th' air leabhar ag innse sgeulachd fhada

I don't know which language you need... How do I say book that tells a long story / What is the name of a book that tells a long story

No bheil thu a' lorg leabhar mar sin? Dè mu dheidhinn Die unendliche Geschichte le Michael Ende, bhiodh seo fada gu leòr

Or are you looking for a book like that? How about Die unendliche Geschichte by Michael Ende, that should be long enough

Haha ceart gu leòr tha mi a'tuigsinn a-nis, tha an luchd sin air Unilang gach là nuair a tha mi a'dol air. "Tha mi ag-iarraidh tatù airson mo (...) dè tha Gàidhlig air (...), bhidheadh sin fuathasach " etc. S'ro bheag oirm sin.

Understand now, people come on Unilang blabbing about that every day. Don't like it too much.

Tha mi a' leughadh leabhar. Tha i 'The Pianist' agus tha n'ùghdair Wladyslaw Szpilman. Tha i glè gruamach.

I am reading a book. It is 'The Pianist' and the author is Wladyslaw Szpilman. It is very sad.

I don't know whether I have should have lenited the glè gruamach, or whether the n'ùghdair is correct. :?

For "The" infront of a vowel you use:

Masc. sing. - "an t-"
Fem. sing. - "an"
Masc./fem. plural - "na h-"

So: an t-ùghdair

As for the lention i would say lenite it as it doesn't begin with "l, n, r, sg, sm, sp, st". That is just a basic rule though.

So: glè ghruamach

Hi, yellow-ceitidh,

I see you haven't had the second verb 'to be' in your lessons yet. Don't worry - it will come!

And don't worry, we can all understand you, and so would any Gael you came across!

Well done! :D

Advanced stuff:

It's + masc. noun = 'S e... a th' ann. (Pron./Sheh...a hown/)

So:

'S e The Pianist a th' ann. (=It's The P. that's in it.)

OR 'S e The Pianist an t-ainm a tha air. (It's The P. that's the name on it.)

And:

'S e WS a th' anns an ùghdar. (It's WS that's the in the author.)

You can now show off to your teacher! 8-)

Or forget all about it till Chapter 10 or thereabouts!

Gabh mo leisgeul, ach chan eil sin ceart. Seall Colin Mark; tha e ag ràdh " beagan adv a little, somewhat - followed by an adjective or adjectival phrase - tha mi a' fearachdainn beagan sgìth.....

Pardon me, but that's not right. Look at Colin Mark; he says......

Agus seall na Litreachan do Luchd-ionnsachaid: beagan trath - a little early; beagan nas giorra - a little shorter; beagan nas fhasa - a little easier.

And look at Letters for Learners:....

'S e seo a tha aig Angus Watson:

rud beag (adv)
a bit, a wee bit, somewhat, e.g. bha i rud beag sgìth

beagan 1. (adv) a little, a bit, slightly e.g. tha i beagan nas sine na Mairi

beagan 2. (noun +gen.)
a little, a bit of, a few e.g. bha beagan siucair sa phreas / beagan rùim sa bhàta.

Tha mi a' smaoineachadh gu bheil blàs làidir 'ainmear uimhir' ann an 'beagan' fhathast. Agus mar sin 's fheàrr le feadhainn 'rud beag' còmhla ri buadhair sìmplidh, agus 'beagan' còmhla ri buadhairean coimeasach (agus ainmearean), air sgàth 's gur e ciall nas làidire de uimhir a th' ann an sin. Cf 'mòran'.

She's older than Mairi by a (small but) measurable amount.
There's a (small but) measurable amount of sugar / space...

I think that there's still a strong flavour of 'noun of quantity' to 'beagan', and so some people prefer to use 'rud beag' with a simple adjective, and 'beagan' with comparative adjectives (and with nouns) because there's a stronger sense of quantity involved there. Cf. mòran

(The adverbial use is the second one, chronologically, and may be seen as an erosion by purists.)

Tapadh Leibh :D

So it's:

'S e The Pianist a th' ann. 'S e Wladyslaw Szpilman a th' anns an ùghdar. Tha e glè gruamach.

I however, don't have a Gaelic teacher (thery're a bit rare in Northampton), though I managed to impress the Head of Year the other day by saying 'Hallo, ise mise Ceitidh, ciamar a tha sibh?'.
