Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?
Tha mi toilichte gun bha do dheuchainn a' dol glè mhath, A Choempa!
Alasdair, tha brèagha leam e. (Ach, chan eil mi ag òl cofaidh. 'S fhearr leam tì.)
Tha mi air bhith trang aig an taigh-tasgaidh na h-iasgaireachde. Tha mi a' leughadh mòran cuideachd. Tha mi a' dealbhaidh fasan meadhan-aoiseil.
I'm glad that your exam went well, Coempa! Alasdair, that sounds lovely. (But, I don't drink coffee. I prefer tea.) I have been busy at the fisheries museum. I'm reading a lot too. I'm drawing medieval fashion.

Tha mi a' sgrùdadh matamataigs an-nis. Tha mo dheuchainn an-diugh.
I am studying maths now. My exam is today.
I was browsing YouTube just now, and I found this. You will not be dissapointed.

Chan eil mi cinnteach mu "tha brèagha leam e"; 's dòcha gum biodh "is toigh leam e" na b' fhearr.
I'm not sure about "tha brèagha leam e"; maybe "is toigh leam e" would be better.

I adapted "Tha brèagha leam e" from this construction: "is neònach leam e = it seems odd to me" (Toraidhean an Fhaclair Bhig, online).

Re: Dè tha thu a' dèanamh? / What are you doing?
IF you use it, it would have to be with 'is', not 'tha' (as in your model) - it's an emphatic, rather literary form.
In general I would avoid actually creating such expressions ('is' + adjective + prep. pronoun) as they don't always sound right or idiomatic - the ones that exist are often rather proverbial, fixed expressions used in certain contexts.
But full marks for exploring and trying out - that's how you get to grips with the language!

Hm, tha mi ga dhèanamh cuideachd ach chan eil deuchainn agam idir, tha mi ag ionnsachadh matamataigs "dìreach airson spòrs" (uabhasach!). Dè cuspairean matamataigs a tha thu a' sgrùdadh?coempa wrote:Tha mi a' sgrùdadh matamataigs an-nis. Tha mo dheuchainn an-diugh.

Hm, I'm doing it too but I don't have any exams, I'm just learning mathematics for fun (terrible!). Which mathematical topics are you studying?

How is learning maths for fun terrible? I study gaelic for fun ;p
Bha matamataigs glè fhàiseach. 'S e stadastaireachd agus seansa; ma-tà tha e fàiseach. Tha mi a' cluichd 'Rise of Legends' an-nis. Tha am gèama glè mhath.
Maths was very easy. It's statistics and chance; therefore it's easy. I am playing Rise of Legends right now. The game is very good.

Oops, I meant to use "is", not "tha"! But it's true, you can't always extrapolate, but it's fun and important to try.
Leugh mi Riaghailt-àireimh ann an àrd-sgoil. Bha e dùbhlanach, agus air uairibh bha e glè inntinneach. Chan eil mi a' dèanamh matamataigs no saidheans a-nis. 'S fhearr leam eachdraidh agus cànanan. Co-dhiù, 's toil leamsa bith-eòlas mara agus reul-eòlas, agus leugh mi leabhar glè inntinneach timcheall nàdur-fheallsanachd ann mo chlas na-oilthigh a-bhòn-uiridh: The Characteristics of Physical Law à sgrìobh Richard Feynman. 'Se "Freshman Studies" ann an clas, facal-toisich gu na h-ealainean libearalachean. Rinn mi an clas ann an oilthigh Aimeireaganach, far leugh mi car bliadhna ro dh'imprig mo theaghlach do Alba.
I studied calculus in high school. It was challenging and sometimes very interesting. Now I don't do math or science. I prefer history and languages. However, I do like marine biology and astronomy, and I read a very interesting book about physics for my university class the year before last. The class is "Freshman Studies", an introduction to the liberal arts. I did the class at an American university, where I studied for a year before my family moved to Scotland.

Rinn mi reul-eòlas trì bliadhna air ais; bha e a' còrdadh rium gu mòr. Tha e cho inntineach! 'S toigh leam fhathast a' coimheadh na reultan ann an t-iarmailt oidhche--ged chan eil tòrr ann (tha mi a' fuireach anns na frith-bhailtean, mar sin tha truilleadh solais ann).
I did astronomy three years back; I enjoyed it very much. It's so interesting! I still enjoy watching the stars in the night sky--though there aren't a lot (I live in the suburbs, so there's light pollution).

A Mhàiri, fhuirich mi anns na frith-bhailtean cuideachd. Uill, bha mi a' fuireach ann am bàile bheag ri frith-bhailtean faisg air làimh. (Bàile bheag ri slat-tomhais Aimeirigeachean, fichead agus beagan mìle feadhainn. A Choempa, gun dèid leat!
Mary, I lived in the suburbs too. Well, I lived in a small town with suburbs nearby. (Small by American standards, 20,000 or so people.) Coempa, good luck!

Done!! It went really well.

Aontachadh! Tha mi a' creidsinn gu bheil matamataigs glè inntinneach gu dearbh, a dh'aindeòin gur mòran fheadhainn a th'ann nach eil ga thuigsinn, gu mì-fortanach.coempa wrote:How is learning maths for fun terrible? I study gaelic for fun ;p

Còrdaidh teòiridh coltachd is staitistearachd rium gu leòr, ach 's e co-aontaran diofarachaidh a tha mi ag ionnsachadh an dràsta.
Agree! I believe that mathematics is very interesting indeed, but unfortunately there's many people who don't understand it.
I like probability theory and statistics a lot, but now I'm learning differential equations.

When I said chance I meant probability of course.
I dit it for high school though, not out of interest.
