Ciamar a chanas mi "olive groves" anns a Ghàidhlig?
olive tree = crann-ola
clump of trees, grove = doire
or sacred tree/grove = bile
So.... bilan crainn-ola? doireachan chrainn-ola?

Re: Olive groves
bile(an) isn't really a word any more most folk would recognize. I'd probably go for coille naomh chrann-ola.

Re: Olive groves
Mòran taing. Just wondered about "naomh" - is it used there to emphasise the importance of olive trees to communities, rather than their "saintliness/holiness"?

Re: Olive groves
LOL well I could only go by what you posted coille naomh chrann-ola is as open to interpretation as to whom they're sacred to as the phrase sacred olive groves would be in English. If you want to be specific, you have to get wordier, like coilltean chrann-ola a tha naomh dhan choimhearsnachd i.e. which are holy to the community.

Re: Olive groves
Sacred wasn't part of the original request though, was it? It was just part of the dictionary definition of bile...

Re: Olive groves
Yes, I wasn't sure about that but assumed since Pam went with bile rather than coille that she wanted that sacred bit in there.

Re: Olive groves
Well, I suppose in this context the olive trees/groves are so important for livelihoods that they do take on a sort of sacred role! I'm limited to 140 characters, so will see if I've got room for 'naomh'.
