curiosity in gaelic

Unread post by semaphore »

Hello

I've been having difficulty talking about "curiosity". I can talk around it and that does for the most part, but still feels a bit too indirect. I took a look in am faclair beag and see annas and there's also feòrachas. I spoke to an older native speaker who couldn't recall the word or its usage so thought I'd open it up for discussion.

He's naturally curious
Babies a curious
I'm asking out of curiosity
People's curiosity with Gaelic ... blah blah

It's a curious thing, which I'd express with annasach without thinking. Perhaps these ideas are expressed with annas and that's just that. Any good idiom or guidance for these ideas or your own?

Cheers

Hi GunChleoc

I'm aware of "sròn" being used in that way. Tapadh leat for sharing that. What if I have a stab with what I've got?

Seo cuid dhiubh far mullach mo chinn, eisimpleir air sgàth eisimpleir ach gu leòr 'son blasad dhen sheòrsa neo-chinnteachd a th' agam a thoirt seachad dhut

tha neònachas aig duine a tha neònach
tha feòrachas aig daoine fheòrachail
cha deanar adhartas gun neònachas a ghabhail
ghabh e ùidh anns gach rud nach robh ceadaichte dha
bha rud a thog a h-aire mun chùis
tha e dualtach do dhaoine neònachas a bhith aca a thoabh na Gàidhlig
's e seòrsa neonachais mì-fhallain a bh' aca ris
's e neònachas dualtach nan daoine a thaobh na Gàidhlig a dheanadh feum dhan chànan aig a' cheann thall

Cheers

You might also want to look into the uses of "ùidh" for a similar concept.

Hi GunChleoc

Indeed. With the right context I think my examples are fine but intuition only gets you so far. When I come across any concrete examples in conversation I'll update this post. Hopefully someone will confirm before then.

Thinking about it again this morning:

Tha ceasnachd aig daoine a tha ceasnachail

Somehow feels like I'm still flying by the seat of my pants but the meaning is less driven by context.
