New German-language Gaelic coursebook
New German-language Gaelic coursebook
For any German speakers on here, or those who know any (I believe there are quite a few at SMO apart from in Germany itself), there's now a very thorough and clearly laid out new Gaelic coursebook in the medium of German :
Lehrbuch der Schottish-gälischen Sprache
The course consists of coursebook, CD (long mp3 disc) and teacher's or self-study guide with answers, dialogue translations , further grammar tables etc.
This is a first in Germany, the only other German 'course' being the short phrasebook-like 'Schottisch-Gälisch Wort für Wort' in the restrictive framework of the 'Kauderwelsch' series - by the same author, Michael Klevenhaus ('Mr Gaelic' in Germany ).
I've had a good look at it and am impressed by the no-nonsense systematic and thorough approach, and the care taken in the 'extras' - wordlists, glossaries, cross-referencing, indexing, clearly signposted dialect variations on the audio recordings etc.
Current standard Gaelic coursebooks in English could safely take a duileag no dhà out of this one, espcially as regards ease of reference via the detailed contents and index pages.
You can get the books from Buske Verlag if you're in Germany, otherwise via Amazon.de

And no, I have no axe to grind!
Just don't like to keep good news to myself!

There's quite a bit of German in the grammar explanations and there's 'Landeskunde' - culture/history etc in German as well, but if you have the knowledge (in any language) and enough German, it might be quite fun to work it out.
I have quite good German, and find it no problem. There are sometimes closer connections to German grammar structures and idiom than to English.
E.g. word order:
Ich muss ein Auto kaufen
Feumaidh mi càr a cheannach.
BUT I have to buy a car.

Tha dòigh ann seo ag ràdh anns na h-uile dual-chainntean aig a bheil mi eòlach ach an cànan oifigeil:

Do, or do not. There is no try.
