Chaidh e air a slighe. He went on his way. - I don't think that's idiomatic. Maybe this one will do: Ghabh e an rathad

I tried tr*nsl*t*ng a benchmark today. We use these at my work to mark survey sites. I made this one to remember my birthplace.

Bha an àbairtean/The phrases were:

• "U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey" became — Suirbhidh Oirthir ¬ Geodetic S.A.
• "Elevation (abbr) 4.98 feet" became — Àirde 105.301 meatair
• "Above mean sea level" became — os cionn àirde meadhain na mara
• "$250 fine or imprisonment" became — càin $250 no braigheachd air
• "for disturbing this benchmark" became — an comharra seo a' cuireadh dragh
• "benchmark" became — Comharra-beinnse

Ghiorraich mi an àibairtean agus seo am buil/I shortened the phrases and this is the result:

A bheil thu na faclan gu bheil a' tighinn bhon beul agam a' tuigsinn. A bheil sin ceart?

I don't know how I would say this. I am trying to say "Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?" for a t-shirt.

Perhaps something like

A bheil thu a' tuigsinn na faclan a tha a' tighinn às mo bheul?

Don't take my word for it, though, I'm a measly learner too.

As for "do you ken the words", you could try either:-

A bheil sibh/thu a' tuigsinn nam facal/facail/faclan?

or:-

An tuig sibh/thu na facail/faclan?

and that "tuig" often sounds more like dwick or dwig, hence the old hippie slang, said to be from irish, "dig?" Indeed, in Irish it IS pronounced more-or-less "an dig". Twig?

Anyway, it's one of those things you need to keep in mind - till it comes natural, that you use genitives for "objects" of periphrastic verbs in Gaelic. Of course, the real "object" is the verb-noun...I'll stop there.

I understand it's technically correct to, as the verbal noun is a noun, but in lower-register speech does it actually happen? Do natives use it there, colloquially?

I mean it as an honest question, rather than a disagreement.
