An e crith-fuinn a bha ann gu dearbh?! An robh i mòr?

Was there earthquake really? And was it great?

Tha cuimhn' agam air a' chrith-fuinn faisg air Magadan (mu 1970), nuair a bha mi beag.
Ach get a bha i uabhasach mòr faisg air a mheadhan, cha robh i cruaidh anns a' bhaile bheag againne.
Bha mi ann an sgoil an uairsin agus cha do dh'fhairich sinn rud sam bith idir oir a bha greis shaor againn :)

I remember the earthquake near Magadan (about 1970), when I was small.
But though it was terrible great near its center, it was not severe in our village.
I was at sgool then and we didn't feel anything at all, because there was a break (between lessons).

Gheibh faod sinn doineann a dh'aithghearr. Tha an t-sìth stoirmeil, tha mi a' smaointinn.
We might be getting a hurricane soon. The weather is stormy, I think.

There is a fixds expression for "might": Is math dh'fhaoidhte gu ..., or in shorthand Smathaid gu ...

Is math dh'fhaoidhte gum faigh sinn doineann a dh'aithghearr / Smathaid gum faigh sinn doineann a dh'aithghearr

"Is math dh'fhaoidhte" -- math fhèin! Tha sin glè fheumail gu dearbh.

It's very useful.

An robh doineann agaibh, a ChelticSpice? Agus ciamar a tha sibh a-nis?
Cò chunnaic an doineann an-dè no o chionn ghoirid?

Was a hurricane there, CelticSpice? And how are you now?
Who did see the hurricane yesterday or recently?

Tapadh leat, GunChleoc. :)

Bha, gu dearbh. Bha doineann ann. Cha robh i ro dhona far a bheil mi, ach, bha i dona *farther east. 'S e **na bailtean-puirt a bha chunnaic milleadh tuilleadh. Tha mi a' smaointinn gu bheil an doineann ***air falbh a-nis.

Yes, indeed. There was a hurricane here. It wasn't too bad where I was, however, it was bad farther east. It was the seaside towns who saw more destruction. I think that the hurricane is over now.

*How would you say farther east?
**I struggled with this part on multiple levels. First, I'm still confused on how Assertive Verbs work, so forgive me if the grammar is terrible. Second, I'm not sure how you would say baile-puirt as a plural. Third, I think I messed up on the last part, a bha chunnaic milleadh tilleadh.
***Did I say that part right?

I worked on (and struggled with) this for at least 30 minutes.

* taobh an ear = in the east. Not sure about the farther, maybe nas fhaide taobh an ear. Beachdan sam bith eile?

**You put the first part of baile-puirt into the plural = bailtean-puirt. 'S e na bailtean-puirt a chunnaic barrachd milleadh. The difference between barrachd and tuilleadh is a tough one, don't worry about that now. It you have a sentence like: 'S e X a tha Y, tha can be replaced by any verb that you want to use, so you don't need the bha and the cunnaic together.

*** you can say that it has left, so it's perfectly acceptable. If you want to say it has passed you by: gu bheil an doineann seachad a-nis.

Tha thu a' tighinn air adhart glè mhath! :D

'S e na bailtean-puirt a bha barrachd milleadh fhaicinn -- am bi sin ceart cuideachd?

... a bha a' faicinn

chunnaic works better in this context though. or: a fhuair barrachd milleadh

F.P. Gabhaibh mo leisgeul barrachd millidh - genitive because barrachd is a noun ;)
