Close
gu bhi -
almost, nearly
m.e. Tha e gu bhi seachd uairean - it is almost 7 o'clock
gum bi - that will be
m.e. 'S dòcha gum bi sneachd ann a-nochd - Perhaps it will snow tonight
word-for-word
It is possible that snow will be in it tonight note the conjunction gum/
that, is compulsory in Gaelic although it is often optional in English.

Ah gum bi = that there will be.
nach bi = that there won't be.
Tha eagal orm nach bi Santa a' tighinn a-nochd.
'S e balach mi-mhodhaill a th' annad!
I'm afraid that Santa won't be coming tonight.
You're a bad boy!

Madainn mhath a chàirdean, chan eil e fuar idir ann an Inbhir Narann an-diugh, 8C agus mise air mo dhòigh glan leis.
Morning friends, it isn't cold at all in nairn today , 8C and I'm totally delighted with that.
càit' a bheil i fuar an-diugh.
'S e "far a bheil" a dhith ort aig teas meadhann seantains. Cleachd "càit" ma tha thu a' cur ceist.
It's "far a bheil" you need in the heart of a sentains. Use "càit" if asking a question.
chan eil an-diugh nas fhuaire na' n-dè!
Dh'fhaodadh tu a radh cuideachd/ you could also say, "chan eil e cho fuar an diugh sa bha e an dè"
A-nis seo Samhlaidh feumail dhut/ a useful metaphor for you:
" Cho fuar ris a’ phuinnsean" - as cold as the poison/ brass monkey weather/ really cold
Seo tuilleadh samhlaidhean/ here's more metaphors Tha feadhainn dhiubh a-mach air an aimsir. ( 'S ann air an taobh cli den dhuilleag ud a gheibhear Gaidhlig, chan eil feum agad an fheadhainn Gaeilge ionnsachadh)
Some of them describe the weather. (the ones on the left are Gaelic - no need to learn any of the Gaeilge on the right)

Tha dùil agam ri droch aimsir Diciadain, nuair am bidh i fliuch fad an latha, ach bidh Diardaoin is Dihaoine nas fheàrr!
I expect bad weather on Wednesday, when it will be wet all day, but Thursday and Friday will be better!.
